Spark plug socket?

How necessary is the $31 socket for the spark plugs? (MCS)

I don't know which particular socket you are considering, but as someone who has changed their own plugs (R53) I can tell you that the ideal tool is one-piece from handle to socket; if you use a conventional spark plug socket on an extension, you may find (as I did until I jury-rigged something) that after you torque the plug and then go to withdraw the socket & extension, the socket stays on the plug, and does not come out with the extension.

I like true spark plug sockets because they hold the spark plug. A couple of tricks to getting the socket out after installing the new plugs. 1) Just barely insert the plug 2) When pulling the socket out, apply sideways pressure to the socket and pull SLOWLY, like getting your shoe out of the mud.

Just use duct tape to hold it together then take it off when you are done.

Yep, regular spark plug socket on a six inch extension with 1-wrapped layer of duct tape holding the two together did the trick - no problem!!

That's right! I have a dedicated socket and 6 inch extension duck taped to it just for MINI plugs.

Sears sells a 14mm 12 point deep socket for about 5 bucks.
Not specifically for plugs but it works. Good luck.

Write MINI SPECIAL TOOL on the duct tape and you can pocket the extra money and still feel special and cool.
