This post is similar to a recent post regarding the engine on EBay. I am very fluent in car knowledge however it is my sister who has a Mini cooper where I have an Integra. I am wanting to know if the MCS engine uses the same short block as the MC engine. My theory is that if they do then all of the tranny's should bolt up. If my theory is correct then you would be able to use the S engine on the CVT Tranny. Maybe it wouldn't be the ultimate road warrior but it would be better than the stock wimpy engine. I'm aware you could just mod the engine and that this could be expensive all of those things are not important as I have labor worked out. Anyhow if anyone knows about the Tranny Apps let me know the rest should be plug and play.

i'll take a crack at this.

The CVT can't handle the extra torque the S motor puts out... so you'd be wasting lots of time and $$$.

Sorry 'bout your luck.

Slightly off-topic:

The Nissan Murano uses a CVT tranny, they call it the "Xtronic CVT". It is mated to a 265 HP engine, the same engine that's used in the Maxima and the new "Z", and is capable of handling, and putting out 250 Ft. lbs. of Torque. It's super smooth...but of course it's also a much larger tranny/engine combo...won't fit in the MINI engine bay that's for sure. Would be nice though! Point is, there are CVT trannies that can handle gobs of torque...they just don't fit in the MINI.

Eventually, (within a few years) CVT trannies will be able to handle huge amounts of torque...250 ft. lbs. ain't half-bad...it's a start...won't be long until it's up to 300...maybe then CVTs will be able to "keep up" with their manual tranny counterparts in the 0-to-60 department.

Rock On,

-MB

Luckily for me i don't believe in luck..

While i do appreciate your thoughts.. have you already done this swap?? My point is unless you have you don't know if the CVT can or can not handle the extra torque. In other words i can make my own assumptions.

Sorry 'bout your arrogance.

Oh and in the Turbo CVT thread i found some useful info from another member.. Jazmini

Hey Chollomo,
I think it was Cooper4us that posted something awhile back that said the CVT is a very stout transmission that can handle over 200 HP right out of the box, and the manufacturer of the CVT was ZF who had their own web site, and the CVT was a VT1 transmission. I have the CVT MC too, and am considering a turbo upgrade, down the road. I was concerned about the CVT being able to handle the extra HP, but not after reading that post. I would like to find the ZF site to read more about it, but don't know what the web address is. So, I would think the turbo would work on the CVT no problem. One of my concerns with the turbo is the turbo lag, but with the CVT (and any automatic transmission) there is also a bit of a lag to spool up the transmission on takeoff. I am thinking that the turbo lag would occur at the same time as the CVT is spooling up so that both lags take place at the same time, rather than having a turbo lag and then also having a CVT lag to add to that delay, making the delay take twice as long. If so, the turbo would add very nicely to the CVT, and would be an awesome combination. Does anyone have any more comments on this?

Cooper4us: If it was you that posted that thread on the CVT, do you know what the web address is for ZF, the manufacturer of the CVT?

I appreciate all comments.

I believe somewhere, MINI themselves listed the CVT as 150HP max.

And John Cooper Works MINI COOPER kit is well below the 163 hp of the COOPER S as well.

The cvt in teh mini differs from the one used in hondas and the murono, they are different technology, I think there was a motor trend or pop mechanic article on that somewhere.. where... yeah the cvt tranny, would have some problems, but if you really into it, why not try and change out the whole engine and tranny, i'm sure theres a standard automatic out there that will fit... you could do it junkwars style... mayeb stel one out of another small car

HP is is pretty irrelevent, as it is the torque you have to be concerned with. If it was me I would go for the swap, Being careful about how you are applying the torque. There are a bunch of guys (including myself) that have built replicas of the ford GT40 where we mate very high HP/torque V8's to the Audi 5000 Gertrag five speed. The Audi transaxle is not rated anywhere near what we are bolting to them and there have been virtually no problems at all. However we never tried a 7,000rpm launch either.

Im not too concerned with the tranny failing but if it did i could just rebuild it in a better way.. the real issue is not that everyone wants to get hung up on what if this or that breaks well once someone puts it to the test we will know for sure. No one knows what it will hold until you tear it up.. Reality however is that the easy path will be to just swap the S engine and Tranny because then you don't have to worry about the ECU not being able to run the CVT tranny. So it appears at this point that my sister will just learn to drive a stick if she wants the type S.. the swap itself should be no sweat. Until we come across a hood we can just run a straight pipe with no intercooler. Or just buy one of those water cooler kits from mini madness.. I could see it would look like the factory MC but would truely be a MCS in the guts.

I want to thank everyone for responding, however I still don't know what i want to know which is are the blocks the same.

-Travis

I believe the blocks are the same size. Good luck, let us know how it works out.
