Drivetrain 2012 R60 Countryman S Turbo N18B16 dyno & tune
2012 R60 Countryman S Turbo N18B16 dyno & tune
Just dynoed a stock 2012 R60 Countryman S Turbo N18B16 dyno with a PAW tune. Similar engine to the R56.2 Turbo S.
+28.00 rwhp / +50.92 Ftlb gain at the wheels on a Dynojet @ 90 degree weather!

Interesting, a little more detail would be appreciated.
Tuning software, any subtle modifications to your R60 S? Tuner who applied the tune?
Very nice gains show on the dyno graph, what was the AF rations and any other interesting items, max rpm, did you raise the rev. limits, etc?
Drive-ability after the tune?
Are you a 6 speed or an automatic?
Thank you,
Don

Not many people know that the N18 motor has been able to be tuned for a while....but the ECU must be removed.
If this tune was done by OBD flash....then you have something new. Regardless...even with the addition of the dual vanos, gains don't seem much different than the N14. The torque would be fun with an AWD CM though....

Thank you for the information. Yes, more torque with the ALL4 and auto would be very nice.
Still a respectable increase.
To the OP, can you ballpark the cost if your comfortable posting it or a PM would be fine to me.
Thanks again,
Don

Have to ask...
1) Is tuning an option for ALL4s now?
2) Is something like this available as a canned tune, or simple ECU swap? Or does it need a dyno tune? Would be a lot harder here, as there aren't too many AWD dynos out here.

Yes, it will work for ALL4s, FWD, manual or steptronic. You can decide to do dyno or not, but it's very noticiable the power gain specially in Sport mode. Also, ECU can be send by courier to re-calibrate I believe.
So, if I'm understanding a few of you correctly (and the post above)... tuning is possible, but I would need to physically remove my ECU and send it to a tuner. Then, I would need to wait for it to be sent back.
Is that where we're at right now? If so, which tuner will do this quickly, and how much does this cost?
Can any tuner do this at a dyno, or does it require special tuning software? Sorry, I'm more familiar with EFI Live, HP Tuners, LS1Edit, etc...

Well, good news for me (perhaps). I found a BMW tuner here with an AWD dyno setup.
I contacted them today, and they said they're more than willing/able to tune my Countryman, but they need to have some way to communicate with the DME/ECU.
What tuning software is required to edit these N18 engines?

Dimsport software can be used to tune the N18, but like it's been stated...the ECU must be removed. Not sure what PAW is using, but I'd assume Dimsport.
Are there any resources I should be reading on this? Or is it sort of an industry insider subject? I hate to keep posting with dumb questions.
I don't want to appear ignorant, just scouting my options. I know a ton of you have tuned R56s, and I wanted in on the action with my R60.
I'll ask the tuner about Dimsport. They've tuned R56s, but never an R60 (not a surprise) - not sure if the software is the same since they're both N18s.
Last note - when you all say "remove the ECU", I'm assuming removing and programming the ECU. Am I misunderstanding?

We have Dimsport software and As of today the only way to tune any MINI with an N18 engine is remove the ECU and crack it open. Then use the Dimsport software to tune it.
If your looking to get a tune, I don't recommend being someone's test mule. Funny story is we had a local guy want a tune, but didn't like our price being a $100 more than his buddy at a BMW shop. So he went there, but icing on the cake was when he called me 4 months later with a blown engine. Good thing he saved that $100, he needs it now.

I get the feeling that he wasn't so much self-advertising as showing that you get what you pay for.
I'd love to get a tune around here, but most of the tuners say "well, I've never done one of those before!".
If Way has tuned these (2011s) successfully and has a working knowledge of them, more power to him. There are other tuners in other states that have done the same (PAW), and I would honestly only trust those that have done this regularly.
I certainly don't want to be a 'test mule'...
