  • 257 / 259° - 9.55 / 8.50mm [Street Performance, trades 1-2 peak HP for 15-20hp more in the midrange] (N/A & SC)]
  • 270 / 259° - 10.50 / 8.50mm [Street & Sport (for turbo conversion)]
  • 270 / 278° - 10.50 / 8.55mm [Track & Rally (N/A & SC)]
  • 278 / 280° - 10.45 / 8.45mm [Track & Rally (N/A & SC)]
  • 296 / 278° - 10.80 / 8.50mm [Full Race, (for turbo conversion)]req. upgraded springs
  • other grinds available on request, please call
They make some bold claims for mid range increase....
I figure with what I have and keeping the car D.D., a cam too big would suffer the low end and make it not much of a street car.
So.... BEGAIN!!!!

Funny that you post this. I have been researching cams a lot in the past couple weeks. A cam is my next upgrade. I am going to get one in the next couple weeks. I have looked through all the options, found the pros, found the cons. And the conclusion I have come up with: Nitrostick NS1 cam. Best price, best cam for the street, and makes the most fun of the mini. I have talked with the actual designer of the camshaft (he is an awesome mini modder, his car is the most fantastic mini I have ever seen). Like you, my car is a DD, this is why I chose not to go for a "race" cam- these are all about having top end power, at the sacrifice of low-end power, which us street nuts really want. No other camshaft will make as much torque as the NS1, and no other camshaft will make the car as fun. It will not win on the dyno... but in the real world it will. Go for the Nitrostick and you will be very very . Thumper sells them for a great price, and if you have any questions, he is more than willing to help you out. He's a great guy and also one of the best sellers of mini parts: http://www.thumperheads.com/content/...ou-build-power

The NS1 is on that page. Good luck and happy motoring

I know him from my Ford 5.0 that I put in to an RX7. Thumper of Orange Park to the Ford guys. I spoke to him while he was on Vacation in Itally, THATS customer support!!! He recomended the N1. I'll most likely get the N1, I just came across the Cat cams and was wondering...... Some pretty strong claims for mid range punch.
But, thanks for the reply!!!!

It just occurred to me that in all the years I've been a part of this and other boards reading and staying informed in the mini performance world I don't remember reading any person with a daily driven mini complain of lack of performance from a cam shaft swap, regardless of brand. FWIW I've had the street grind of the Newman/rmw camshaft for about 3 years and am extremely happy with the increase in midrange power without sacrificing top end power, which may be contrary to a previous post and some opinions out there. Suggestion: read plenty, get opinions from different people with different points of view, and use the information to make your own mind. I have a feeling you will be happy with your well informed purchase.

the catcams are pretty popular in europe i have one myself ( in combination with an adjustable cam gear )

as said above: what you are looking for ( in a DD ) is more torque throughout the rev band, and thats what you get ! ( from the first one , haven't tried the others yet... )

and as far as i know, only the first one runs ( almost ) stable without raising the idle revs

Thanks for posting here, I've been looking at CAT as well. Can you provide more details about the difference between the OEM idle & the idle with the CAT 257/259* cam?
Also, have you tried this cam at CAT's recommended cam timing & at different ICL's using the adjustable cam gear? If so, what were your impressions?

sometimes you can hear/feel a little stutter/unevenness @ idle but only sometimes and nothing too mayor.

the adjustable cam gear came later. all this does is bring the torque curve further into the lower rpms ( turned it about 2° forward )
only downside ( with the adjustable cam gear at 2° forward ): way less burble/pop from the exhaust.

For what it's worth, VAC has been around doing good work on BMWs for awhile as I understand. They seem to know their stuff. They helped me out getting an aFe intake for my Cooper as well, really good customer service.
