Exhaust deflections and modding an aftermarket exhaust

I drive an 03 MCS with intake, exhaust, and 15% pulley (soon). I currently have an Alta Sportone exhaust installed and it is single sided. The muffler is on the passenger side and piped towards the passenger rear corner of the car. The pipe coming out makes a HUGE deflection to go towards the battery box, then another deflection out the back center. (Scroll to the bottom of this page to see what I'm talking about http://www.eurosportdesign.com/p-119...tem-02-06.aspx)

I am considering an aero rear bumper in the near future (possibly an R50 rear depending on the outcome of this post), so my question is this:

Would it be beneficial to have a metal shop cut the pipe, after the muffler, and run a short pipe out of the exhaust port in an R50 rear bumper. This will shorten the pipe out of the muffler about a foot and eliminate two deflections.

Does anyone know if this would get me any more ponies? or cause any problems?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Nobody? RMW? WMW? Mynes?

I'd even accept Alta...

At least give me an "I don't know dude" or "good luck".

Theres nothing at the bottom of that page other than a set of brake pads. ? By deflection do you mean bends/angles?

I meant the "View from Bottom" picture, which is just above the brake pads. And yes, by deflections I mean angles/bends. I hope the post wasn't too confusing. Maybe that's why I don't have responses. Thanks for posting though.

Maybe you should just get a custom rear exhaust section when you get the bumper cover you want? It might cost a little more then simply modifying what you have and you could sell the ALTA for part of the cost. Just a thought.

I was thinking a cut-and-weld type job would be a lot cheaper than a custom pipe and muffler. But I'll keep that on the ideas list. Thanks

you know i have gone through many exhaust systems on many of my cars through the years. from custom made stuff to store bought and now i also own the alta setup on my mini. i really feel it is a waste of time to try and eliminate a fiew bends in the system. any car will have a small hp gain from a non stock setup. but i really feel doing what you are thinking would be so little of a gain it would just not be worth doing.
my *** dyno really could not feel the gain from the stock to alta setup. sure its 5 or so hp. but it is reall hard to feel any gain .

mabe my *** is just not that sensitive.

I think your dyno is pretty accurate, I could really only tell a difference when cruising country roads uphill in 6th gear. Thanks for the input though. I'm only really considering it because I'll be getting a new rear bumper soon, and I don't want to find out after the fact that I would have benefitted from doing the cut/weld mod on the exhaust and piping it out the side rear.

I'm trying to make the most confusing mini ever I guess.

Many claim extra bends hinder exhaust flow. Part of the issue is with angles, and part of the issue is with how smooth of a bend they have. A larger pipe does help make up for this, and most aftermarket MINI kits upsize to 2.5" piping. Personally, I think it is a good idea, if for no other reason than to apply an original idea you came up with. Especially the part of using an R50 bumper. Maybe someone else will catch on.
