Tuning (RMW or other), Dyno & AFR....

Hi Guys,

I've been searching around for info on the tuning process of our R56 and going through the dyno sheets. Lot's of dyno results are available but they never display AFR ratios.

Those of you who have been tuned by Jan (or others) can you walk us through the process? When your strapped into the dyno, you obviously get WHP & WTQ, but is AFR being measured? Where is it being measure on a stock exhaust system?

Just trying to understand.

Thanks!

I know my A/F ratio's were being measured, there was a tool clamped to my tailpipe, so i'm not sure if that was the source, or the info was taken from the ECU. But I know A/F's are definitely being watched

This was with Jan (RMW) btw

I hope it was from the ECU....it shouldn't be from your tail pipe. It needs to be before the main CAT.

I'm debatting doing a remote tune but I want to keep my car more of less stock. Especially the exhaust but there's no bung for a wideband O2 sensor. Although I keep reading that the mini has a built in wideband...just very little info on it.

They read it from the tailpipe and they are watched closely during tuning. There is nothing wrong with reading from a tailpipe sniffer...the readings will just be slightly leaner than they would be from an actual wideband reading. So if you are tuning off of those...you are going to be on the safe side, the motor will be running slightly richer than the readings.

And yes the R56 has an onboard wideband. I have my ScanGuage set up to read AFR's at all times.

Humm...so the on-board O2 is truly a wideband, that's good to know. I still haven't connected my Scangauge yet. I find the cable end get's in the way of my left foot.

As for the tailpipe sniffer, my local dyno shop will not dyno with a tailpipe sniffer. They insist that it's not accurate enough. They're a good shop and very well respected (tune Porsche, VW, Mitsu, Subaru and of course Honda).

When I was tuning my last fun car, this was a real issue and I ended up installing headers with the additional bung. Loved the performance gain but the car was annoying as hell to drive. The drone on the highway was unbearable. I always regretted the headers.

Feed the cable up through the compartment below the steering column. It will be out of sight and out of your way.

I've been a bit lazy on the scangauge....I need to get on it.

I just picked up a Forge intercooler and that's my next install. My engine will be staying stock aside from the Forge and Jan's tune.

Downpipe needs to stay....it's a daily driver for myself and the wife...spousal approval needs to remain high.LOL

Plus I really don't want the exhaust any louder than it is.

Not to mention that none of the currently-available downpipes are CEL-free...
