Drivetrain ***OFFICIAL SIGN-UP THREAD for FLASH TOOL***
I think this has been discussed before, but I don't think anyone gave a definite answer. Does the canned tune take into account aftermarket mods such as intercooler etc.? Also has anyone done the remote dyno thing yet? And if you have what would be the protocol to accomplish that?
yes, it will need a different file now to read a BMW
I can send it to youwhen you are ready
Sign me up! I can't find any posts indicating the GB is closed so I'm hoping I'm in. Just bought my S last week and already have a DP & CB on the way. Looking at ICs, susp & bushing kits right now. Also trying to decide how to put one of the 2 spare GT28RS turbos left over from a Porsche project to good use on this fun little beast of a car. I'm glad I found this site!
I'd check out some of the post's orangecrush has made about his car, I know he's posted up a bit of info about his tuning experience and he has a factory JCW
Second that, check Orange Crush's sig, or drop him a PM, I'm sure he'd be happy to tell you all about the gains. Simply put, you could go out and buy every after market part and still not see the gains you'd get from a RMW tune by itself.
What you will notice immediately is the speed at which the turbo spools, the power delivery etc. Most JCWs will make in the 10hp + range. Traction control improved, rev limit increase, quicker back on boost after a shift.
Jan can chime in here if he wants to add any more info.
The real test is the performance of the car. I'm in GA right now at Roebling Road. I'm here to tell you that with my tune, I PULL past a LOT of cars that shouldn't be getting passed by a mini, JCW or not.
The numbers in my signature are REALLY low, I haven't been to a dyno since the new tune but I know how MUCH HARDER the car pulls that with the tune that was installed last year. I assure you Jan knows what he's doing.
Like I said, I haven't been to a dyno as of late, (just waiting for Jan to get close to me...within 500-600 miles) so I can get it dialed in but I can tell you the usable amount of power above the line is RIDICULOUS.
On a sad note, I melted yet another valve cover. Even though I double nutted the studs from my ED downpipe and welded a brace on the bottom, it continues to come loose allowing the heat to blow out and melt my valve cover.
This time, it just started when I caught it. I spent almost 3 hours in a parts store parking lot replacing studs with "exhaust" nuts. (apparently exhaust nuts are different....we'll see, I've double nutted them. At least the nuts are made of a different material and the threads are "crimped")
Today, I'll go beat the ***** off the car, there's going to be some ego bruising going on.
Mark
Despite this issues Mark had yesterday, I can back up the fact that the car is a beast. We are not in the same run groups, but I have been able to watch and listen to Marks car. Hopefully with the new bolts and nuts, the valve cover issue will go away..............He's got a great attitude about it and he'll be back out ******* it today......
Just got home from MOTD and I can answer the question about the RMW custom (i.e. dyno) tune and gas mileage.
It's a little over 550 miles each way for me. Last Wednesday, most of the drive was in the 40's and 50's and we averaged right at 70mph and my gas mileage was just under 35mpg. Cruise control on most of the time and no A/C because it was rather chilly outside.
Today, it was in the mid 80's and I ran the A/C most of the trip. I'm still not believing the numbers myself but this isn't the mileage the car's computer gave, this is the mileage divided by gallons (to the 1/10th of a gallon and mile) and I ran 37.8mpg at an average speed of 71.7 mph.
While at MOTD, it was amazing how the car ran! Most everyone with me was running in 2nd gear way up in the RPM range to have the power to pull through and out of those deep switchbacks. With a few exceptions, I found myself running in 3rd and I was pulling away from almost everyone coming out of the turns. Down the straightaways of the Hell Bender, it wasn't even a close call!
I'm looking forward to seeing what the generic tune will do, I'll load it up later this week and see how it does.

Factory JCW with Tune
I have not dynoed it, but the turbo definitely spools up faster and pulls harder, especially from 4000 up. No roughness or flat spots. The real test will come 5/26 at Laguna Seca, but I'm quite happy!
How do you like the flutter when the turbo blows off? I am still getting used to it.
