where does this piece go?

hey guys! so i've got a left over piece from doing my engine rebuild. i've attached 2 pictures of what the piece looks like, and it looks like something i would have problems if not installed.

that being said, i am having problems. i'm hearing a clicking noise, like a cv joint or transmission noise, when the tires/drive shafts are put under load (accelerating) and letting off load (engine braking). it sounds like it is coming from the driver’s side right under where the clutch pedal is.

this issue is less relevant when at higher speeds, probably cuz of road noise, but with having that extra bushing, i think i might be doing damage somewhere.

any thoughts?

It goes in the transmission mount. I just put in some PowerFlex bushings in and had to leave it out. It was too tight of a fit with it in there. As I recall, it went between the OEM bushings and the housing.

nice!

now i wonder where it exactly goes. i had a feeling it had to be something on that side and will hopefully quiet down the clicking i hear.

i sketched where i think it should go, does that seem right?

after reading your post again, i think you might mean either 1 or 2 in the following picture?

I'm pretty sure the clicking is the CV joint as you suspected. It's a pretty common problem.

The clicking could also be a "loose" axle. In my case the big *** nut that holds the axle at the hub had work itself loose or something (or so says the dealer).

So, The clicking is gone!! I ended up installing the plastic piece in the #2 area in the picture above.

I also noticed that I somehow did not torque down the bolt that goes through the transmission mount! It was hardly hand tight! Damn, that's what you get for working on your car for 12 straight hours and finishing around 2am (motor install after installing .020 over cp pistons from jan)...

I took my axle out and repacked it too. It seemed to be stiff enough and did not really have any play in it, so i just put new axle grease in.

I was able to torque the axle nut down quite a bit too. It was not loose or have any sideways play in it but it definitely needed torquing.

So, installing the plastic piece, actually torquing down the long mounting screw and re-packing the cv joints on that side took care of the noise for me!

Now all I notice is a slight 'lumping' feel like a motor mount is going bad when going down the highway. I also pushed and pulled on my front tires on both sides and notice some play. I'm guessing a full set of powerflex bushing all around will solve the lumping and play in the tires.

This car is just a blast to drive!

I stumbled across this thread as researching my Powerflex transmission mount bushing install... I know that it's way late, but I snapped this pic as I removed this part to replace it with the powerflex bushing...
