Ported & Polished Head - A Missing Link in the R56 Quest for Power/Torque

With all the talk about ECU tunes and turbo modifications, it seems as though a continually proven method of making power/torque has slipped though the cracks with the R56... ported & polished cylinder heads!

I've seen one on the NAM marketplace, but does anyone have any first hand experience with one on an R56? I could of sworn someone based out of Texas roaming around NAM got one done for their MINI. Spill the beans! Cost? Time? Things to look out for during installation after completed?

Yea, and he was tuned by Jan and made really strong numbers.

226hp, 256 torque...

Thing about the ported heads though, for the price it costs to do...you should be able to buy a complete turbo kit (soon) and get a much much bigger gain.

From what I recall, masterd did it because he needed the head rebuilt anyway.

I just thought of it because it's a solution that works and it works TODAY! We still have a long way to go with any type of turbo kit in the U.S.A., especially with making the ECU obey our commands.

Do you know what the typical cost for PnP is assuming you're not buying a brand new head?

Not as long as you think!

I told myself I would stop at just below 300hp, but we'll see how that goes

Hey its worth it can never hurt to PnP. The problem is people here just want brute force power not easier power. So pretty much if its not an intake, exhaust, or tune its not worth their time.

I must say that I think the gains I have from Jan's tune have a lot to do with the PnP head. The reason I did it was because my original head warped do to overheating. I don't know if I would fork out the money to do it if it wasn't for that. I do look forward to a turbo kit, and then a retune with Jan to hit the magical 300 mark!!

I just hope you don't end up damaging a piston or a rod masterd. No one in the U.S.A. has stepped into that territory with long term results to report to NAM. We'll definitely be waiting!

Well I've had it on now for about 5 months and I've been driving it hard. No concerns as of yet!

How would he damage a piston or rod from a ported head?

Going to breath some life into this thread. Any updates on a PnP head for the R56, anyone in the USA doing work and have them for sale with core exchange?

Thanks Don

I have heard Thumper here in Jacksonville, Florida does it. I have heard of some independent shops doing the same. I ran into someone on MTTS that had his done by a guy in Miami. He built his car to in the neighborhood of around 260hp and said that the head is one of the things that holds the R56 back in the persuit of power.

I think at that time, gees almost three years ago, there were concerns how much power the bottom end of the N14 could take. From what we know now, his numbers seem to be at a safe margin below where some users started to see failures of piston ring lands. It's when the stock turbo is pressed at 22psi+ or using the JCW turbo at this level that concerns start to arise.

Yes! Thumper was the guy.

Wow that's awesome NAM blocks Motoring Alliances site. What a load of crap. If you check the engine & drivetrain section of the vendor forum Thumper460 has posted it there.

This seems to be a safer solution to increasing boost and as a result increasing cylinder peak pressure.

I will just keep telling myself I don't need more power, which is certainly true in the grand scheme of track driving. It is so tempting though!

I want to polish mine but, porting it is a little more than I want. Hell I might just do it to do it.
