Drivetrain ECU question (kind of technical)
ECU question (kind of technical)
Hi,
I have a 2003 Cooper S with a 2005 transmission. The cruise control doesn't work because the ECU expect a certain gear ratio from the 2003 transmission.
I've done my homework and found that if I get a 2005-2006 ECU, it should work.
Now, if my dealer agrees to do it, will they be able to enter my VIN number into the ECU in order to make it work?
Can they program the new ECU to have my car's option such as DSC, OBC, and (most importantly) cruise control?
Thanks a lot!!

a new DME will have to encoded for your VIN..which corresponds to an '03 R53. So basically you have a new DME with the same coding/programming as you had before.
If it is even possible to code and program a newer dme part # with the older programming, which I dont think it is.

also check the threads on moving from teh Midland's 5-spd to the 6-spd. I've read something about reprogramming, so you shouldn't need a new ECU. I have an '02 R50 and put an '03 6-spd in it. Cruise works in 4th and 6th, but not 5th. odd, but liveable. Have you tried different gears?
You might chat with TxSpeedwerks (or whatever their screen name is). They're (he?) the ones who wrote the "manual" on changing to the 6-spd in the R50 and I think mentioned something about the cruise.
Quoted from their DIY guide:
"If you note that your cruise control does not work after the install, try resetting the ECU using a Peake tool - follow the instructions on resetting the CEL light to clear all codes and then give it a shot... Other things to check if the cruise doesn't work are the brake and clutch switches - ensure they are properly adjusted and functioning, and then try resetting the codes (if you have them). The codes for the clutch switch malfunction and cruise/brake switch circuit malfunctions are P0704 and P0571, respectively."

Good luck!!

I have this same problem. After doing lots of research the only person I could find that found a solution was 1fastmini. I called him and he stated that I need to find a shop that has the "autologic" programing system and they can reprogram the ECU to the values of the 2005-06 CC values. I haven't done this yet and would love to know if anyone else has. You can google autologic to get more info and find a dealer.
Hope this helps.

That's interesting. They make diagnostic tools. It's fascinating that the cruise would care what gear ratios you had. I just figured it would use velocity input to either give or take gas. it's beyone me why it matters what the tranny is. Those clever germans!
