K&N typhoon intake = worse than stock?

I'm looking to get an aftermarket intake.

A lot of people here on NAM seem to have Alta V2 and DDM. From what I read, Alta and DDM gives you high supercharger whine noise.

I'm looking for an intake that would give me a little more of throaty sound rather than high pitch whine. I'm thinking K&N would give you more of throaty sound... Am I wrong?

And why is it that K&N is not as popular? Is it bad quality? Are HAI bad for your car?

Thanks in advance guys!

An intake on the R53 is going to give you a high pitch whine.

It's the nature of putting an open intake on a supercharged car...learn to love it.

Agreed - changing the supercharger "whine" into a lower/throatier sound requires an enclosed intake of a particular shape and inlet size to "tune" the sound (kind of like a subwoofer enclosure), so that's not something you're going to be able to get with any open intake.

The K&N typhoon is not a hot air intake. It is actually pretty similar to the alta cai.

So why is K&N not as popular? For some reason, I'm pulled more towards K&N because it seems to give little more lower pitch noise than others...

How is it performance wise?

If you don't want any or little whine then use the JCW box and aftermarket filter. You can remove the flap and have whine most all of the time (which isn't as loud as an open intake), or just hook it up as directed and only hear the whine when the flap opens at 4500 rpm's (which is when the engine starts to needs the extra air).

If you decide you like the whine then just pick your aftermarket CAI to use.

My wife's car has the K&N and in conjunction with her other mods she put down 267whp on Church's dynapak. I'd say it performs just fine. We got it because it is CARB certified and we live in California.

Ditto batrugger on the reason I originally picked the K&N. I have no complaints. And I love the noise, too. I would do it again regardless of the CARB sticker.

DDC is the adjustable shocks. They have 2 settings. Sport and normal. Are you confusing it with DSC? DSC activates brakes and cuts throttle to keep the car from losing control. I feel my JCW's tail twitch during hard braking when the DSC is off.

Are you confusing typhoon with DSC? Typhoon is an intensive storm, DSC is a half baked driving aid that get in our way of our fun wheels drive that is the Mini.

I wasn't even in this thread when I posted it. I don't know how it got here. Sorry for the confusion.
