The MINI Madness Cooper S Intake has now been on my MINI for about 4000
miles - trouble free (I got it just before my trip to Canada).

As a supplement to the dyno plots, here are my impressions of the
differences compared to the stock airbox. Please note that all of my driving has been at 4000 to 9000 ft with the intake, so you sea level folks may notice a little more than I did:

1) For those that are wondering, you can feel the power gain. It is
noticeable.
2) Power delivery is smoother, especially 2nd gear.
3) Throttle response is improved.
4) When accelerating, the supercharger whine is more pronounced above 2500
RPM.
5) On the freeway or around town, if you are basically just maintaining
speed, there is no change to the noise in the cabin compared to stock.

In short, when you get on the gas, the improvements are noticeable, but
when just cruising around the intake doesn't have an obnoxious way of
making itself known. Cool.

SNIP!

What effects does the regular intake produce?
(Just so I know if I am suffering from them!)

Pebble.

Pebble: I should have been more clear. The cabin noise is unchanged if you are just driving around and lightly applying the gas. So unless you get on the gas hard, or get the RPM's up, the sound is unchanged.

Oh But the Sound is soooooo Sweeeett! It Actually ids the most pronounced with all the windows up, sunroof closed , radio off and you zing it from 2500 to say ohhh 6400 rpm.. Very Nice whine..
Nothing too dramatic though.. Im not a yo boy ricer that is into the Megaphone exhaust.. I beleive in stealth mode.. If im driving like a bat out of hell i dont want to call attention to myself.... Especially if its the police..

The box looks a little home made in the pics. Like the two pieces of weatherstrip instead of one continuous piece, and the sharp corners on the sheet metal. How does it look in person Dave?

Is this intake considered a cold air intake? I understand it has somewhat of a heat shield, but does the duct in the front of the car direct air to it or would you have to remove the entire airbox?

It retains the two cold intake ducts (one from the front, the other through the cowl area) although it's not sealed shut like the stock box. It can still suck some ambient hot air from the open side around the ecu, but not much.

The pics in the how-to show alot. The bottom of the airbox is retained, and that is where the snorkel from behind the grille dumps the cold outside air. the heat shield seals agains the inside of the hood, so basically it just forms an enlarged airbox which holds the high-pass filter with its velocity stack.

Wow that looks good but I has anyone heard anything about the BMP Racing Air Filter that is $169 and produces a little more hp like 12.9?

Check it out!

Hello all yes yes I am a newbie. But I just got off the phone with BMP and they told me that the Intake system for the S cooper will not be available for two or three weeks. They said that they also had Dyno results, but I did not see them. You save 70 or so $ if you buy this system. But in the back of my mind is the saying you get what you pay for??????????? Help I don't know what system I should buy, I guess I will just have to wait and see what kind of reviews the BMP system gets.........

i've been waiting for the BMP as well, primarily because ia allows fitting a strut brace. BMP has told me "next week" several times now. as of the 20th, they expect them..."next week, but expect ten working days"

The now-to notes that the intake does come come oiled, and that must be done before installation - I've never installed a performance intake before, how do you oil the air filter? I think that would make a good addition to the how-to, which is otherwise fantastic.

Have you ever applied hair spray to your head? If you answered yes to this question then you will be able to oil a filter. Go down to your locale auto parts store and purchase a K&N filter charger cleaning kit. This kit will come in both an aerosol and squeezable applications. Get the aerosol kind. The kit also comes with great instructions.

The Rouge Engineering kit comes complete with oil and cleaner. Just spray it on. It's red colored oil spray so you can see where you sprayed. Piece of cake to install.
Ten minutes with neigbors asking what I am doing to a brand new car. Works great too.
