How can I tell if I have a Getrag or Midland

So I had a meet up today with my local Motoring Club. I test drove one of the member's 2004 MCS (79K). He has a Helix SSK installed in his car. When I was driving it, his shifter was very very stiff. It was actually a bit difficult to shift. I asked him was it like that before he installed the SSK and he said yes. He test drove my MINI and even told me my shifter felt like butter. Easy to shift. (my MINI has 65K miles)

I bought my car second hand so I don't know if transmission work was done to the car. Is there a way I can tell if it's a different transmission? Or is it just maybe the difference in wear and tear? The tranny oil? Wear and tear in shift cables?

Oh really? Oops. Not enough research on my part...

I thought the MCS had a transmission change somewhere between 04 - 05 ?

I think it is down to wear and tear, and the transmission fluid. If he shifts by grabbing the shifter and forcing it into gear, that will wear and damage the syncros more and faster than if you gently guide the shifter with an open palm.

The type of transmission fluid can affect how well the syncros work. When I replaced the standard fluid with Redline MTL, shifting was noticeably smoother - keeping my open palm guide shift method.

My Mini is the one Mr Cooper S is refering too.

His shifter was shockingly different than mine, butter is a good word to describe it. It was loose as all get-out, and felt like it could be shifted by accident if you weren't careful. It felt like it didn't lock into the gears very well.

My shifter is certainly stiffer, but after driving 2 other Mini's, an 05, and an 06, my shifter felt more like those, than the Mini driven by Mr Cooper S.
