over 5000rpm power drop

Is there any any fix for the lack of high RPM power on the r56 yet?

I short shift at ~5500 just to keep it down where it pulls the best, I have noticed the AC drags quit a bit, so I shut it off if I want to really run the RPM's up

is it chip related? Head design? Restrictive exhaust?

It's because the tiny turbo runs out of steam at that RPM.

It was engineered to have lots of low end torque and very little lag, at the expense of high RPM horsepower.

A bigger turbo upgrade will help this issue out! Just gotta wait till more people try to make one and some options come on the market. I bet in the next year we will see tons more tuning options coming out for the R56.

ahh that sucks, I would not give up that bottom end power, even if it fixes the top end power completely

best part about the r56 is how quick that power comes on

Yea but you should be able to find a turbo with a pretty good compromise. The GT-25 turbo looks like it should fit the bill perfectly, and it is the turbo that Alta chose for their kit that they are working on.

A GT-25 kit, with full exhaust, combined with the ported/polished head that 1FastMini is working on, plus cams if they figure that out, with a good tune. The R56 will be an absolute beast with a set up like that!

I completely agree, I'm sure there are quite a few mods that would help with it, but probably not noticeably. You will just have to get you a bigger turbo, or you can just twin charge it, haha

I prefer top end because i only get out the hole once. If your a road racer then yeah low end.

If you have a decent turbo shop around you, they should be able to take your turbo off and clip the turbine wheel. Clipping the wheel kind of shifts the powercurve up top more but you do get a tad more lag.

That alta turb would be nice if some one had a decent way to tune it in.

So what RPM should we be shifting at if the turbo is losing power up top.

I've been shifting around 5500 when the boost drops. A few times, especially when I was out motoring today, I rung it all the way out to about 6100 rpms just to see about this extra top end, even though the boost drops the horsepower keeps rising..
Honestly, not much there, (i know that's just what we've been talking about), so for me, shifting at 5500 gets as much of the boost curve as I can without "the curve of diminishing returns", so to say.
Gotta be careful though, too soon, and it throws you right into the dip at 3/3.5k rpms... haha

If you calculate it out using a solid dyno plot, you still get more torque to the wheels by going to redline [6500] than to upshift early to the next gear. This was clearly proven when I brought my '07 R56 to Gingerman for an HPDE last year. Slap on a turbo-back exhaust or the JCW Stage 1 and the R56 pulls in the top end significantly more than stock.

So we should bring it to the redline, say if we were at the drag strip?

That would produce the quickest times?

I love when you post because you provide an infinite amount of wisdom!

LOL thanks

Yes, for quickest acceleration, to the redline you go! Even with a stock Cooper S, redline in the lower gear [no matter which gear] puts down at least a few Lb-Ft more torque to the wheels than up-shifting to the next gear.

it may put out a few more hp/tq, but it does not seem like it revs as fast?

I dont think there's a way to test that on a dyno

Couple quick points. The car does taper due to the turbo. BUT tuning can help to some extent vs. the OEM mapping. Also, the intake, exhaust and intercooler really help in the upper end by reducing restriction (regardless of boost level.)

Depending on how severe the OP feels the drop is, would determine how much improvement he would feel with the addition of the exhaust, intake etc.

If I can help further PLEASE let us know!
