this is a custom air intake with parts sold from an auto center it was pretty easy to put together (it was harder to take out the old one) the air filter is a k&n like filter (lifetime w/ oil on the filter)

Nice to see a DIY effort. Other than the sound, though, that's not going to give you any performance gains.

i dont know the engine seems much more punchy
i will eventually make it a cold air by building something around the filter to keep the engine air off of the filter

also the snorkel that was removed seems like it shoots outside air directly at the filter area

i would beg to differ, yeah it wont be 20hp or anything but i bet he gain 1-3hp off of it. this is a less restrictive filter with a better flow tube build a heat resistant box around it and it would be even better

That's what I see as the problem. The filter is almost right above the exhaust header and has no heat shield. All that extra heat will rob him of any increased flow. I think he'd be better off going with the old HAI that many here on NAM have tried, which is simply a k&n filter attached directly to the throttle body.

The supercharger heats the intake charge enough to need an intercooler. Adding more hot air to the mix doesn't help any.
A K&N drop in filter in the stock air box would allow more air volume and keep the intake charge temp down.
My Dad gave me a speech similar to this one when I turned over the air cleaner lid on my '71 RoadRunner to get more intake noise. I thought it sounded faster.
