Sound of CAI

06 MCS. If I removed the stock air filter and cover (obviously just for this test), then ran around the block would the sound I get be anything similar to a CAI mod?

Just trying to see what the sound of a CAI would be from inside the cabin with windows open and windows closed and also standing outside with the MINI driving by.

Probably. Look online and you can find audio and video clips of different intake and exhaust systems.

Your test should give you an idea of an aftermarket CAI sound. Did it sound like you had a dentsit under your hood drilling away?

I haven't done the test yet.. just wondering if it would be helpful in determining what a CAI would sound like. I don't know anyone local with a CAI I can listen to.

Last weekend I did just what you're asking, and I did hear a different sound. However, it wasn't really as noticable at the lower rpms as at the higher rpms. So, if you just drive around a neighborhood at the same speed that you would normally drive there, then you might not hear it as well. But get out somewhere where you can do a jackrabbit start and work through the gears and then you'll hear the difference. Which is probably why they say that even though technically, you should get better gas mileage, you probably won't -- becuase you'll be driving so as to hear the sound better.

That might get you close to the sound, it may even be louder. There are plenty of clips on youtube that will give you some idea as well. I have a JCW intake, and honestly its not much different then stock (as its not supposed to be). At about 4800-5000 I can tell that the flap opens and the sound is increased slightly, but it isn't anything crazy. It just sounds a little louder then stock when you are on it, but just like stock when you aren't.

+1

p.s. new exhaust may decrease how much intake noise you get, but will make the "drive it till ya hear it/low mpg phenomenon even worse i'm very pleased with my jcw cai / milltek symphony....so is the gas station.
