15% pulley, best belt?

My S has an Alta pulley and stock belt and all is well When ordering a replacement belt, it is better to get the stock size for a JCW kit or the regular old stock size for an S? I'm of the mind that the JCW belt is better since it is sized for a smaller diameter pulley but are there things I didn't consider?

thanks

Shorter belt for smaller pulley; makes perfect sense to me. Go with the JCW.

You can run either the JCW or a stock belt. I'm currently running a stock belt with my M7 16% pulley, and it hasn't slipped once. You can also go aftermarket, like a Gator belt.

Detroittuned has a Gates belt that is a bit shorter than stock that will work perfectly with the 15% Alta. I changed mine earlier in the spring- kept the OEM for a spare. They also carry the gatorback.

You can run stock or JCW -- I got the JCW from the dealer when I changed to the 15% -- it was cheap

is there an advantage with the gatorbelt? Detroittuned suggests it's 'tougher'? thanks

When I did research, I heard the Gatorback by Goodyear was the best belt to get, but I also heard it comes with a little sound....so if you want a quiet car, don't go with it (though I'm no sure exactly how loud it is). From my understanding, the Gatorback belt is suppose to be stronger and anti-slip, so a lot of people recommend them.

thanks, i'll look into it - the supercharger whine is pretty pronounced so unless this belt is really loud, it sounds worth it to have a stronger belt.

reading more about LOUD BMW's using the goodyear replacement timing belt makes me wish someone would post a sound clip of a MINI with a gatorback

I'll try to get one for you but we have company this weekend. Yes the Gatorback is much louder then stock. I'm using the 4060537 on my 17% setup. What you will get is a noticeable wine from the belt from idle to about 3000 then the wine shifts for the SC. I sort of like it. BTW my TDI NB has a GB timing belt and sounds similar.

Funny thing is the packaging says "The Quiet Belt"

Here you go. I used my cell phone and sat it on the passenger side strut tower.

This is the best I could do.

Gatorback! Get one and you'll be problem-free for a long time with a 15%.

I've had a Gatorback on my 15% for more than one year, and it still looked like new.

I changed for a 19% 5 months ago and got the NAPA belt from Helix installed at the same time. It began to slip 2 weeks ago and was badly damaged. I got another Gatorback and I am sure it will be good for a lot longer than the NAPA... I did not take the car to a track or abused the NAPA belt. I rarely go above 6000rpm and only got it once to 7200rpm (for a dyno)...

Bottom line, get a Gatorback!

I just put on the 4060537 Gatorback belt with my 15% pulley. The tensioner thingy shows one full hole. The belt works good and is not that loud.

Many people have gotten better results withthe stock belt over the JCW. If you go 15% you can still use the stock belt with no issues.

If you do stick with the stock belt make sure the tension is still within spec.
Make sure that you can see at least half of the index hole like in this picture.

My stock belt has 25,000 miles on it. 20,000 of those with an Alta 15% pulley. No issues what so ever. I'm planning to replace the belt at 30,000 with the JCW belt.
