Easy easy. 30 minutes and 15 if you have done it before. Car drives way better, but that might be because previous filter was filthy. Looks cool and cost $43 from Autozone. Filter even comes with its own clamp. Easiest mod I have done. Ready to autox tomorrow!

Because shorter straws are easier to suck through.

At rest it is indeed hotter than a CAI, but once the car starts moving though it starts to suck in cool air again.

What was the part number of the filter you used? I want to do this, like right now.

I'm pretty sure there was some testing a while back (by Andy, if I remember correctly) regarding this. He found that more air was better than less even if it was warmer. Up to a degree, I'm sure this is correct. As Some Guy stated, once you get moving, things cool down pretty quickly.

Also, keep in mind that most "cold air intakes" arn't even that, so this mod is valid.

Several years back there was a lot of talk HAI vs CAI. The shorter straw theory has applicability like you say to a point verses AIT. The HAI is a fun, easy and inexpensive mod, allowing many to experiment and get first hand cause and effect experiences.

The M7 AGS incorporates part of the HAI theories.

The original aftermarket CAI design was an open box and opened to cowel vent. The final consensus however is that the original CAI design is overall the best of all worlds. From there the aftermarket made a lid for most of their CAIs. Toady virtually all aftermarket CAIs have a lid of sorts.

Another example of how the original factory design is tough to beat but can be tweaked. Also bear in mind that most of the gains from any of these aftermarket CAIs is the FILTER.

IMO, figuring out how to mount a cone filter inside of the stock airbox is the best (cheapest) solution. But it makes sense that above school zone speeds, you will have air moving around a lot and will suck in some hot, but mostly cool air with a hai mounted up front like that. If it was in the back, I think the benefits would be less.

ahhh; welcome to the hai fold as it were . this is a very cool mod . just look at all the air flow now . get rid of that bottom piece to the stocker though . just cut it off . and then more air flow through the bay .

Yup!!! Agreed!!!
Just unplug the ECU, remove the filter box bottom half, (it has one 10mm hex bolt in the front right corner attached to the trans mount), and use a jigsaw on that motha'!!!

If this sounds like a dumb question, that's probably because it is, but here goes ...

I noticed you have a Works configuration, would this mod be only for a JCW setup, or could you put it on Justa Cooper?

You can do it to a "just-a-cooper"... The JCW intake uses the same base, the only difference on the top is the infamous "FLAP" in the back

Thanks for that quick reponse. Now for one more question. Does making this simple mod improve gas mileage, or lessen gas mileage, or is it one of those kind of things where there's divided opinion on the answer?
