Drivetrain Exhaust sound question.

Exhaust sound question.
I've been going over videos on youtube.com of MCS exhaust sounds, and no matter how nice they are, they still sound like a 4-banger. I been trying to figure out why, and I've finally stumbled on it, the sound has no harmonics. If you listen to this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbzpU...eature=related
there are several harmonic tones that kind of blend in together to create a "rich" sound, where as with this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beBC5...eature=related
it's a good sound, but it doesn't have the resonance that the M5 exhaust has. Now, before you tell me I should go out an buy an M5, I found this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMd2Qozz81Q and this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEoJ6...eature=related
...which seem to have the same full resonant sound of the M5. How? Why? Anyone? Thanks!

i would say that you cant base the exhaust note solely off of youtube vids... there are waaaay too many variables in how it ends up sounding online.
Obviously whatever muffler you get has a huge impact on what it will sound like.. but you have to remember that a finely tuned exhaust system can sound different depending on where the resonator is mounted. In essence, adjusting where the resonator is can effect the final exhaust note much like tuning a guitar.
also keep in mind a SC vs NA vs Turbo will almost all sound different. plus, i think that eisenmann exhaust is made to sound raspy like that.

you should consider getting a custom magnaflow, i think they sound nice

Well those 2 videos of the MINI are of a Cooper, with an intake. Cooper's get that meaty sounding induction when you put an intake on them. That is the noise you are hearing which makes it sound "richer."
There are plenty MCS exhausts that have a full, resonating, deep, rich, etc. sound to them. Try looking for an RMW exhaust sound clip...

Yeah, you are comparing apples to oranges. You also have to realize that these -are- 4cyl engines, and not a v8 like that m5.
A vehicle's exhaust note in the combination of many things. The size, layout, and internal design of the engine, every individual section of the exhaust (manifold, cats, resonators, mufflers, tips, diameter and number of pipes, etc), where the exhaust exits, how it is routed through the car, and probably more items.

Unfortunately, youtube is blocked at work, so I can't speak to your specific videos but I can echo some of your disappointment. I've heard a number of Lotus Elises and Exiges with the Toyota 4 cylinder motor sound like race cars. The sound doesn't seem contrived/produced or nasally as I'm getting from MINI sound clips. It has a rawness to it that I haven't heard from a MINI yet.

True, they're either NA or supercharged.
However, I've never heard a celica or civic or other NA 4 cylinder car sound like these Lotuses.

2. Shorter exhaust travel.
3. Higher rev limit.
4. NA induction.
Those are the major factors in how the Lotus' sound they way they sound.
I'm a fanatic of how my car sounds as well. But the fact of the matter is that the R56 is a turbo, it's going to sound completely different from NA engines. Personally, I LOVE the deep tone of a turbo. The only way you're going to get that "race" sound is if you dump all kinds of money into it (heads, cams, high comp pistons, headers, ecu, etc.); and frankly, there isn't that much out there for us at the moment. Hate to be an ***, but that's kinda the beans of it.
Now, if you're interested in the deep tone of these cars, get you a Supertrapp Wavetech and leave it open. It's a deep growl.

What do you think of ARQRAY Exhaust
fm.Ilum,
I have been looking into exhaust for a few weeks now. First off, I am not into volume! I want performance with a nice low growl. I think we may have similar thoughts for exhaust. Have you heard of Arqray? Check it out and let me know what you think.

Keep in mind that the video is from Korea so I am not sure as to the emission requirements over there. All I know is that the exhaust on his Cooper S is the closest to the sound that I am looking for, but I am not sure on the performance side. Does anyone out there have any insight into Arqray???

thread on Arqray exhaust is here: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...d.php?t=134861
Exhaust with stainless tips ($700) or titanium ($1000) plus shipping... kinda expensive.
Here's another vid of the Arqray exhaust (i'm pretty sure this guy has the same one) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWS3AwMimgE

In addition to the factors already mentioned (NA vs. supercharged vs. turbocharged, rpm limit, engine displacement, etcetera), the sound of an engine's exhaust note is also largely determined by things like firing order, the angle between cylinder banks in a V-type or horizontally-opposed engine, and how the pistons are arranged on the crankshaft (for instance, in an inline-4 engine, do pistons 1 & 3 move up and down together, or do pistons 2 & 3 move up and down together).
This is why a Hayabusa can never be made to sound like a Harley at *any* rpm, even though they're both NA engines displacing approximately 1.3L. One's an inline-4 and the other's a 45° V-twin.

its way more than that... its 800 for just the muffler than another 700 for the centerpipe. So total its 1500ish + shipping and handling...
