Just put in a CAI. verdict: cake

AFE Cold Air intake installed in a 2006 Mini Cooper S. Bought it through my off road business, here.

Pretty happy with this. Install went very smooth. I try to always test fit everything prior, it seems to make the actual install quicker.

How to I reset the computer again?

Here are some pictures

How to Reset the ECU:
  1. With the key in the ignition, but in the off position, press and hold down the odometer reset button with one hand, while holding the button down, switch the key in the ignition to position 1 (first click) with the other hand.
  2. The screen will have a number and the word “tESt”.
  3. Scroll through the numbers by pressing the odometer rest button, through to 19 and wait a moment. (Note: the number order is: 1,2,10,19)
  4. The message will say 19 "L i-off", flash to "L i-on", and back to "L i-off" again. When "log i-off" appears, press the odometer rest button again. You are now in the system.
  5. Scroll through to 21. tESt and wait a moment. 21.0 rESEt will come up. Press the button once.
  6. Your gauges will now make some sounds and movements. Once the lights come back on start your car. You have now reset your ECU and your MINI is now ready to relearn the new mods and your driving style.

Doesn't unhooking the battery do the same thing?

Nope I just did mine, service record still there. I did loose numbers in the trip odometer and the time.

Keep in mind that there have been lengthy threads about how "resetting the ECU" either via the code method or the battery method does not do what it is purported to do (cause the car to start from scratch in getting an optimal equilibrium for mods). I don't think it will hurt anything, but some folks around here are adamant that it doesn't help.

Personally, I don't know what to believe.

Being newbie, I'm not sure about the reseting. I do know that instructions from other CAIs I have installed have said to disconnect the battery. No previous installs on a Mini though.

I'm not aware that you need to reset your ECU for a CAI?

I always unhooked the battery when some mod called for it in the directions.

I put a CAI on my 98 Jeep. I think it was a K&N and it said to remove the battery.

If it is true, then why wouldn't K&N tell us to reset after a panel filter install? hmmm

After driving it for some time today...this AFE version is very, very quiet.

I find that after doing mods on my MINI that I do a reset on the ECU so it can learn the new mod.

CAI is lettingin more air, so why not let the ECU learn.

I definitely agree that resetting the ECU after a mod is desirable so that it could adapt to your new components faster.

I'm just saying that I've read lengthy discussions on this board that say you're not actually resetting the ECU by:
1) disconnecting the battery, or
2) using the odometer control test menu option

As I recall, the proponents of this theory say that you can only truly reset the ECU back to scratch with a MINI specific electronic tool (perhaps one that dealers have). Even a typical OBDII reader wouldn't have this ability.

OK - I searched a bit and found a discussion where the efficacy of using the methods above is called into question:

A thread on whether you can reset the ECU

Also, keep in mind that resetting the ECU is not the same as reflashing/remapping/tuning the ECU.

A simple reset will theoretically get your car to learn how to work with the new components faster (within very narrow factory parameters), while a flash/remap/tune will help to squeeze every ounce of performance out of the significant changes you've made to the fuel/air/exhaust system.

I think people often don't believe a simple change to a less restrictive intake is worth flashing the ECU (e.g. a Jan tune). But add a pulley and/or exhaust to the mix, and it's a whole new ballgame in terms of performance gains.

While unhooking the battery during an install may help by resetting the computer, most manufacturers state this merely for safety reasons.

exactly.

Resetting the ECU on a MINI really doesn't do much. There is very little latitude for "learning" in the MINI's.

They just don't want to be held responsible if you accidentally shock yourself
