I'm towing the car myself about 65 miles to Mini Corsa to have it looked at. If the car is really messed up I might do the stroker for the right price. I have so much on my plate right now, I had forgotten about the Mini I pray its something easy.

Do you think it is the residual effect from the shock wave from passing you last time you were in AZ?

I am just kidding. Hope it turns out better, perhaps you will get some sort of gain out of it.

On the subject of a stroker, what is the mean piston velocity of the MINI at redline? Anyone know the connecting rod length?

I hope that your stressful times come to an end very soon. I also hope that your Mini gets back on the road.

Im not sure about overall length, but i believe our c to c is 5.975, but someone correct me if im wrong. I would also like to know the MPV, but havnt got around to the math, would you mind letting me know if you findout? thanks

Well the mean piston speed calc is simply 2*rpm*stroke/12. Since we have a 3" stroke, this comes out to 3500 ft/min at 7k rpm. This figure is right for a street car. We have a well undersquare motor (3.5" bore, 3" stroke). This should mean it has quite a bit to go in terms of rpm before things start breaking. A stroker is going to bring the rpm limit down. If we brought the stroke up to 3.5", the mean piston speed is over 4000 ft/min. That is pushing it into racecar territory. Just a FYI, racecars also use undersquare motors so they can rev high without breaking. 24 hour racers are around 4500 ft/min, Nascar is hovering around 5k along with F1.

thanks jan, i had got my number from a rather custom build, i assumed there the same lenght, and what does assuming do? yeah.....hahha

anyway kapps, your engine size isnt correct , the Bore is 3.03 and the stroke is 3.39 (77 by 86 mm). Which make it over square, and something i dont like very much, good for torque i guess, but i want rpm. Your size would be 1.9L, mine is 1.6L, and if you reverse my numbers to make it undersquare, it would be 1.8L. This makes our piston speed 3955ft/minute.

oh good, i thought it was just me, because every once and a while its puts all my paragraphs into one big one. Makes it awkward to read, it also wont let me edit when that heppens, so i have to clear all my history and cache and all that jazz to get it to work properly. Having to clear all that is rather annoying , but what ever, not that big of a deal.

Yes you're right and that's why we shouldn't rev the **** out of our motors. And we don't have to over rev em anyways because we've got forced induction! Too bad MINI didn't start building 1.8L or 2.0L motors for the Cooper S though.

No problem Beecher. I got my numbers from a website, they must have been wrong . With a stock piston speed of around 4000 ft/min, a stoker is definitely pushing it.

no problem, when i first got those number, they were reversed, thats how i found out they were 1.8. Then again, i keep seeing that our motor is DOHC in the car mags as well. Go figure.

You guys got a SC, im NA, so i "need" to rev, hahah, I dont know what stroke Jan is using tho, it might not be too bad, i would like one just for the increse in dislacement. I like to look at an engine on the BHP/L figure to see how much room for improvement there is.

Hey Jan, how big can you go without stroking it? What kind of bore are you running? That i might be more interested in than the stroker because i want to be able to rev mine to the moon (10k maybe? ok, id settle for 9(yes i know, i know). If i had an S tho, I would be all over that stroker motor.

Mario let us know what they say at Mini Corsa. Hope it is just something simple.

If it a blown motor I'd buy a junkyard motor, slap it in and sell or trade it in on a new / different mini. Maybe search out a GP?

Nothing but pain, misery and lost revenue from that car.

uhm. i thought the whole idea of the stroker was to produce something these cars lack.....torque . jan's gonna get way more torque and more power without bringing the revs up . for those of us who drive street and would just like to punch it and go without wringing it out for every rpm produced h.p. then this could be the way to go . he is still testing the mules i guess. probably to failure at some point . to see where the limits lay. i'd get heavy miles on um to prove longevity ; then slam the hell out of um to see when they break .

im not bashing the idea, like i said, if i had an s, i would be all over it without a thought, its must that the extra stoke in an already oversquare motor isnt really what i want in an NA engine that i would like to rev. If i had an s, i wouldnt need to rev it, and therefore, would love to have the stroker because i wouldnt be revving it so much, but perhaps i will later decide it will handle it. Ive heard some pretty impressive numbers about his stroker kit. And its more the pistons im worried about more than anything else. The higher the piston speed, the more trouble you can get into. But under 7000, i wouldnt worry about piston speed at all, but i would like to take another 1500 or so onto that, and i think jan is taking it to 8k, so i probably have nothing to worry about. I havnt put a huge amount of thought into it quite yet, as its going to be a bit down road, right now its head/cam/ecu and what not. Bottom end come in 2 years, unless i blow mine before then, i could see that happening the way i drive on the track...

Well, I towed my car down to Mini Corsa on Saturday. Danny will be taking it all apart to see how bad things are. I cross my fingers and pray it is something easy to fix and won't cost me $$$$$$. He did mention the oil pump may have gone bad and starved the motor. As soon as I get my phone call I will let you guys know what's up.
Mario

Good Luck Mario. Hope it's not bad. You may want to look at a new part by Jan if you rebuild. I think Danny may have talked to Jan already.

welcome to the club Mario. i'm on number three now. It's always been the number 4 piston that's gone bad on me. It gets lean and blows rings and puts holes in pistons. I got some software to fatten up my air/fuel. I was getting into the 15's. now i'm sticking to the 12's and 100 octane at the track just to be safe.

Same thing here, #4 ringlands broken. I'm curious about what happened this time. Was it #4 on mario's car last time? I would like to know if it is always #4. Maybe time for a poll, for those that can set one up.

Maybe time to get myself to a dyno for a check up too.
