One balled my exhaust this weekend

Hi everyone,

So far after owning my mini for 4 weeks I have installed a CAI and just recently one-balled my exhaust. The exhaust modification is exactly what I wanted (sounds stock if you want it to or sounds like a beast when you step on it !!) Abvsolutley perfect.

I shopped around for a while going to different muffler and exhaust shops here in norwalk CT. Most of the sales guys were like, "why would you wanna do that or that will cost 300 dollars". I started getting real fed up with these jerks who werent interested in helping me. Finally I made a last stop at a midas. I went into there thinking they would give me the same crap but they were actually intrigued with my request. THey quoted me around a hundred buck which was good enough for me. About an hour later after some lunch I went to go pick it up. THe mechanic ended up clamping the new connector pipe as opposed to welding it which is fine by me.

My first inpressions were that It retains the refined sound alot of people like with the complete stock system but when opened up it sounds raspy and untammed, (Which is awsome)

I wanted to let everyone know about how happy I was with this mod. I was hesitant at first after still reading all the reviews and opinions about it. But I wanted to add my positive experience. The only reccomendation I have is to look around and find a mechanic who is nice, and willing to do it for a reasonable price.

I did mine the day after I got the car after hearing it flowed almost as well as some aftermarket systems, I couldn't turn it down. Only thing I don't like is when the muffler is cold it's very raspy(not that you should get on it while it's that cold anyway)

The place I went to wanted to know why, then said it could not be done. I asked them to put it on the lift and I would show them what I wanted. When they saw what I wanted they did it in 20 min for $50.

Glad you like it. I have had mine on for almost a year now maybe more. I love it. Your price is not bad, it varies from area to area, but I paid ~$60.00 and it took a little longer, 6 hours, my exhaust guy ran out of gas.
Well, happy motoring.

That area of CT has a knack for having things cost a lot. I would know because I live near there. If i ever want this done i know to go straight to midas.

i went to a local exhaust shop that's right near my dad's little warehouse (for selling window tint)
the guy quoted me about $50. he said it might be 40 or it might be 60. just about the right price everyone else is gettin it done for.
still comtemplating on whether or not to get it done.
most likely i will. someday.

Did mine too.........

Wish I could say it went well. Bought the pipe first. Went to a local shop who had no problem accepting the work. When I went to pick it up he gave me a long story about how much work it took to make sure it did not rattle. I have a convertible and when I looked underneath, it was apparent he spaced the cross brace to make more room for the pipe. It still didn't make it. At home in my driveway I removed the pipe, heated it and flattened a section. Much better but still rattles. Not much room in there for a large diameter pipe to go through. Now I need to either eliminate the rattle completely or buy an entire cat back system. Sounds good though!

Rocking... I will bet the guys that talked down...OWNED some 800+ system!! LOL The differance between a 1-ball and an open exhaust is ONLY 3 WHP!!! The 1 ball might not sound as cool at the 800.00 systems... but the 1 - ball will run right with them!! Good choice and see ya on the roads...

Just me......................................

Had my one ball for about a month or so now ($60.00/20 min local shop) and love it; no rattles just a nice smooth sound and a little throaty if ya nail it. Like Thumper said, if ya read all the threads about it, for the money (cheap) it has to be one of the best mods to do. Just couldn't justify a $600.00 or better SS Catback system to the CFO (wife) or myself really for those few more HP, rather use that money on swaybars, control arms, etc. lol.

Agreed - as long as it's done properly, there's nothing there to rattle that isn't in the stock exhaust config.

The ONLY thing I don't like about my one-ball is that when the exhaust is COLD, the burble sounds like marbles rattling in a coffee can... but as soon as it warms up (which only takes a few minutes) it sounds nice...

^Agreed... When started cold, the lack of a resonator makes it sound a bit raspy as you accelerate through the rpm range. For me, it's a good audible reminder to shift and keep the rpms down until the car is properly warmed up.
