Seems all my horsepower modifications and I forgot the one no no with the Limited Slip Differential. "DON'T DO HOLE SHOTS!" Snapped the passenger side drive shaft. Luckily I'll have a new one tomorrow but this really is a pain.
Vendors - Lets start thinkin about a stronger pair of drive shafts!

care to elaborate on "all [your] horsepower modifications"?

also: Suprchargdmini, how are your (in the works) driveshafts different than stock?

Cheers,
Ryan

CooperSpeed - Drag racing start. Not good on axels with the limited slip.
Ryephile - Currrently installed, Quaife Limited Slip, Rogue Cold Air Intake, Altek 15% Pulley, EVO Software, Mini Mania Header and high flow cat, Borla Sport Exhaust, high performance wires, SSR Competition 17x7.5" wheels with Bridgestone SO3's 215/40/17, Spax coilver suspension, Autopower rollcage ,and Sparco Milano sport seats. Planning on getting some pictures tomorrow since everything else I have is outdated.

Why cant car makers just build the s--t strong enough to handle 220 hp 3000 plus RPM launch. I had a jeep that would pick up the front tires 1 out of every 3 times I tried the other 2 were twisted axles. There are ways to make the stock ones stronger. I think, and dont blast me if I am wrong, Shot pean and tempering but how much stronger and what it would cost I dont have a clue.

I take it when you say you broke (fractured) a drive shaft that you are talking about a half-shaft. Did the fracture occur at the inter-connecting shaft? In a groove?

This brings up an interesting thought...

In an effort to reduce driveline stresses for events such as these, wouldn't it be beneficial to switch to a lower gear set (i.e. change out the final drives in the MCS)? It seems that the tall stock 1st gear will only add to driveline stresses especially under hole-shot situations with high-HP/TQ modded cars.

Wishful thinking I know... since no one has even hinted that they might develop gears for the MCS.

A quaife will not hurt your axle's on a launch, if anything they'll help as they help to distribute power more evenly. Also I know http://www.driveshaftshop.com makes custom axle's and damn nice ones at that

The limited slip diff can hurt if the other result would have been wheel spin. Sticky tires break more axles than slippery ones. You wont break an axle if the tires dont hook.

If something is going to break, better the axel than the transmission.

With better axles that might be the next part to go. Time will tell. There should be a sheer pin that is put in the drive line that is just a hair weaker than the axle then you can dump the clutch and the worst that would happen is you have to change the pin. My 2 cents.

SHEER PIN!!!!!!???????

Yea, I'll put one in my drive line after you put one on your kite string. (:
So when yours lets go you can break ur neck and when mine lets go on a 90 mph sweeper I can join the Concrete Abutment Club.

To become a member of the CAC you have to total ur car by hitting an inanimate object. In the old days many friends were members. Under the right conditions those abutments can sneak up on you. Trees too, they're quick.

sprchrgedmini - The half shaft is where it has given loose. Believe it or not, the car is still drivable, but only if I'm gentle with it. At least it's getting me to and from work. Symptoms are knocking under all conditions coming from the right front. (Thought at first it was suspension but ruled that out with a check of all the appropriate bolts and replacement of the shock) With the car elevated we were able to reproduce the sound in the half shaft joint itself.
As has been said before, sticky tires and extra horsepower coupled with the LSD has proven to be more than the current design can take. I would much prefer the weak point be the clutch. As painful as that may sound to replace, it provides a much nicer area of saftey from repeated thrashings.
Will have the camera tomorrow night at the premier.
