i run double adjustable, mine are set stiff comp and slow rebound up front, and stiff comp middle rebound in rear

I get some tail wag when braking from 125mph, usually around the 80mph point I slowed the rear rebound a little but that also affected my understeer

Do you have the JCW larger rear brake disk? I put the Way kit on the back to balance out the Wilwood 6 pistons up front and helped with the tail wag under braking.

Had a pretty good 3 days at Watkins Glen. First day was open track followed by 2 days of typical HPDE with class and scheduled time on the track. Ran the ZIIs and 17" wheels on Friday and things went well. The ZIIs squeal like crazy but have reasonably good grip. I made a scoop style brake duct that seemed to help keep the rotors cooler and reduce the pad pickup I have been having a problem with. Saturday I tried the 15" wheels with the RE71Rs and found that none were balanced right, so back to the ZIIs while the 15" wheels got rebalanced. Afterward I did 2 sessions with the 15" wheels and found that they really trapped heat, which argavated the brake pad deposit issue. So Sunday was back to the ZIIs. I also had one of our driving coaches go out with me. He helped with some fine points and I found I was drifting around one of the turns, which left him chuckling.

A few things to note. The owner of an M4 didn't replace all of his wheel studs when one broke. All 5 then broke on one front wheel in a high speed, high g load turn and he lost a wheel, went off the track into the tire barrier and flipped the car. Then it got so hot on Sunday that people were cracking brake rotors.

As for the brake pads, I am going to switch from the Wilwood Poly H to the Hawk DTC 60. These are the favorite of the E30 drivers and that car is similar in performance to the MINI. I'll let you know how that works.

brake pad deposit issue? Are you talking about the transfer layer?

I run dtc-60's I like them, I'm going to try gloc 12's and then decide which to stick with. DTC-60 will dust a lot and that dust will rust all over the wheel and side of the car if it gets wet, just FYI

Ya, I'm getting excessive buildup in places on the rotors from transfer from the pads and the brakes shutter when I get on them. It comes and goes, though, so I know it isn't warped rotors. In addition to going to the DTC60s I think I will try slotted rotors.

how did you bed them? You should see pad material all the way around on the rotor, not spotty like that

These were bedded sometime last year and I have maybe 6 track days on them. They run ok on cooler days. They have problems when it is hot out and it is worse with the smaller wheels, which seem to trap brake heat.

I bed them with used rotors. I have a 6 mile long hill that I can go to and get good heat into them without having to go too fast. From speed I slow aggressively 6 - 7 times and then drive home. They will be pretty stinky when I am done. Pretty standard bedding procedure.

I always re-bed on the rotors I use for the track, you want a nice transfer layer all the way around

dont use the rotors you have with hawk pads, different material type you would need to sand or turn down the rotors to get the transfer later off first

Interesting. I gave my backup rotors (used with my Wilwood pads) to a guy who used them with Hawk DTC60 pads and they worked fine.

the hawk 60's are pretty aggressive they probably cleaned off the old transfer layer

Crap that crack is no good

You did get me thinking that I might try a dedicated set of rotors with a matched set of pads and see if that helps.

That crack (and the one forming below it in the picture) reminds me that someone at the event I was at had a rotor explode coming out of a turn. It ripped a 1 foot by 6 inch chunk out of the barrel of the alloy wheel, ripped out the lower control arm and I don't know what else. I think it might have been caused by uneven heating (inside to outside) of the rotor.

the one below it is just crazing in the pad transfer layer, they do that all over the place after a real hot session and cooldown

they go away soon as I go out and get them hot again

Just signed up for the Patroons chapter of BMWCCA event at LRP on July 29th. Yup, instructors and class room, and time on the track. Not for everyone, but I have learned that as I have become better the less I know about driving. It is almost always helpful to have an instructor in the car for a session or 2. I have had some great ones.

If interested, sign up and come and join me for a romping good frolic around this little bull ring. Oh did I mention that it is on a Saturday?

Go to Motorsportsreg.com and lookup Lime Rock Park. You should see this Patroons event listed.

What car would you think of bringing?

Just saw my helmet is no good. Has SCDA changed their helmet requirements, too?

Woo Hooo!
it will be great to see you there. My Cousin will be there too with his M2. Not sure what Zre, veggi are doing.
It seems that SCDA is still allowing 2005 helmets but they need to be SA.
I think you will find that everyone is changing or will be. It surprises me SCDA hasn't. Snell has changed their testing between M and SA as they find that the SA needs to protect for the hard hits against the roll cages. Not sure why it matters for street cars, though. Maybe legalese. I did get a 2015 helmet on line for under $200.

Elivan said SCDA will change over next year to the newer helmets. A lot of clubs must have prohibited SA2005 helmets this year because it's almost impossible to find SA2015s in stock. I found one but it wasn't easy.

RE: IMSA @ LRP — I definitely can't go Saturday but maybe Friday. What exactly is the MINI corral? Is the Street Tuner class race on Friday?

Hey, welcome back!
That is probably a no for me for the IMSA races. I pulled the plaster off a wall in our dining room and figure I should finish that project before taking a day off for fun stuff.

The MINI Corral is sponsored by the JCW MINI team. The practice and qualifying is on Friday with the races on Saturday. If you go on Friday and sign up for the corral you need to go through the track office entrance since the outfield entrance will not be open.
