From the description, it sounds like the DVD will cover a wide variety of topics, but I'm wondering about the 15-minute length - doesn't seem like they could go into much depth in that time.

Still, free is free, so I ordered it. I think I'll order OctaneGuy's DVD as well, just to see what's on it.

Thanks for ordering my DVD guys. That's correct, a Detailing DVD in 15 minutes isn't going to be full of a lot of indepth info. My section on using ScratchX by hand is already 10 minutes.

Heya Richard, yeah I have one detailing DVD that covers basics (not yours but im waiting to win that in the photo contest haha) and it covers the basics but doesnt touch on the PC very well. Thats the main reason for me ordering your DVD and the fact its like 2 hours then I know I am going to get a lot of information that I will use, and maybe some I wont use but I will have a much better idea of whats going on with different steps of the detail.

Cant wait to see it!

Well I bought the "other DVD" that's being sold around here on NAM, and if that's the one you're talking about--it's well produced, but not very deep on info. It's also a pretty slick promo for Mothers. There are some good parts to it, but the section on the PC is very weak, especially considering it's being demoed by the manufacturer of the foam pads--he should atleast know how to use a polisher.

My DVD is more about the nuts and bolts and just getting in there showing you over a 14 hour period of polishing out a single car, everything that was done, and the decisions that were made along the way. What to tape and what to be careful of. Whether you should do it by hand or machine. What chemical you should use and why. It's the next best thing to actually standing next to a pro and learning all his techniques as he explains to you what he's doing and why.

Hope you like it! I know thousands of others have loved it...and btw, I requested my free copy of the Griots DVD as well.

the Griot's DVD is enough to get you started. i got that and the handbook free when i bought their starter kit. it's a nice DVD.

 

Yes, we show everything by hand and machine, but in the DVD, you will see that due to the amount of effort needed to remove swirls, we prefer to do it by machine!

We show how to use spray wax properly (by hand), applying a glaze (by hand), etc.. Clay process is by hand, and so is taping. LOL. Though the emphasis on the DVD is how to use the PC polisher, even if you don't have one, there is plenty of techniques to learn by hand in it. And remember the focus of the DVD is also on polishing paint...not general detailing which might include tire dressings, engine detailing, washing the car, etc..

As far as shipping goes, I got two orders today as indicated in this thread. I processed and packed them already, so they will go out by FedEx tomorrow. The delivery time is 3 to 5 days. To Tennessee, probably 3 to 4 days. If the address you give me is residential, then I can make sure to send by FedEx residential which also delivers on Saturday at no extra cost.

As a little teaser, I did shoot a video of me working on the GP that I recently polished out, but we had some technical problems--mainly due to using some new equipment that we weren't familiar with--and I wasn't the one behind the camera of course. I doubt the video will be released in its entirety due to the issues at hand, but I may release snippets from it, or maybe I will just shoot another one from scratch. In any case, the PC DVD is a great place to start and learn everything, and in the near future, no timeframe yet, I will have a video out on detailing a MINI from head to toe--but the video won't go into details already covered by the first DVD.

I have OctaneGuy's DVD on order, but just received and watched the free Griot's DVD. They show a close-up of the random orbital being used, and even though it is shown in somewhat slow motion, the pad on the machine at times seems to be moving so slow that it almost stops. Do random orbitals really spin so slowly or was it vibrating so quickly that I couldn't see it ...he had wrtitten on the edge of the pad so you can see it is not turning much but it didn't seem like it was vibrating...were my eyes deceiving me?

 

no, they do spin slowly depending on setting and how hard you press.
that's why you don't burn through the paint. that's the video that
kicked me off into this orbital buffer madness.

 

Yep, it's the tight orbital motion that does all of the work, and with 4000-7000 orbits per minute and an orbital diameter of only 1/8" (really really small circles), the orbital part of the motion can be hard to see.

As for the circular rotation of the pad, the owner's manual for the Griot's buffer says that the pad should be rotating one revolution every one or two seconds while the buffer is in contact with the paint, so while it's orbiting like crazy, it's rotating very slowly.

 

One reason that it appears stationary may be the shutter speed of the camera with respect to the speed of the orbital... sort of like the old westerns where the stage coach wheels appeared to be turning backwards at certain speeds. Also like what a timing light does to make the timing marks appear stationary when in reality the mark is turning.

If you're curious about the motion of the PC, watch these video clips--watch the marking on the pad to see rotation.

The rotation isn't important from the standpoint of defect removal. It does signal whether you are applying too little or too much pressure though. Depending on the density of the pad, or chemical saturation from continued use, and pressure applied on the PC, the pad may spin more or less. I don't pay attention to rotation speed though because it's more important to use the correct pressure and that's something you can both see and hear.
