Morris- i remember seeing that pict of the heater when we were
talking about the oil filled heaters.

Since you're only about 50min NE of where I am, i believe we share
the same Chicago 'hot' days a couple of weeks in the summer time.
my fan is a 26" (?) and have it on MED, sometimes HIGH to keep
myself bareable especially after coming back from a drive and detailing
my car. The garage will easily creep up to 100F, even 105F at
times. can that fan really keep you humane after a drive?

I was worried about this too, but the place that did my floor assured me that with the type of floor they used that it would not be an issue. They had samples in their store that appeared OK, so I had them put it in. So far, it has been fine.

The system I have is not just a paint type finish. They put clear epoxy on the floor, then sprinkled a grey, granular material on the epoxy. They repeated this and then put a final finish coat of clear epoxy on top of the second coat of the granular material. So, it has a textured finish, sort of like rough sandpaper instead of being smooth like paint.

Here is a picture of the floor. Hope you can see some of the texture.

My garage has never gotten that hot...yet. On warm days, I usually open the door to the house and set the fan in the doorway to pull cool air into the garage. That helps a lot.

I don't usually stay in the garage after coming back with a hot car. I usually wash the car in the evening and dry it in the driveway and then let it sit over night and polish it in the morning.

There's your problem.... Start weaving around the bugs.

I don't know how effective it is to mix in sand (or another grippy agent) with the epoxy, but it's something to consider....
The company we bought our epoxy from (www.originalcolorchips.com) offers a silicone bead additive to put in when you are doing the final clear coat. We used it down in our kennel building because we didn't want a wet dog slipping and tearing their ACL. When you have $10,000.00 working police dogs on site, you don't want a careless injury occurring!
Anyway, it really works very well but isn't something you can really see just by looking at it. If I were doing the epoxy in my garage I would definitely use it!

nice job, Morris!

btw, i know it's no longer hot in our garages, but is there an alternative
anyone can recommend to substitute my standing fan? I need decent
air flow in the summer time as it can get extremely hot; i would prefer
an oscillating fan... perhaps something i can mount onto the walls?..
(plus i think fans are an eye sore...)

if i can get rid of that fan I can put a nice tool case there. ive quickly
ran out of space in my little tool boxes i have and want to invest
in a ball bearing tool case.

Ken,

How about something along the lines of an attic fan? I don't know if your garage has a ceiling or open studs showing but pullin the air up and out might be another way to go.

the garage has a ceiling but it's below 2 of the bedrooms... i would
need to directly vent out from the front if i add something like that
i think...which my village would not allow.

i think i need to get something like a wall mounted fan...

i think im going to get 2 tower fans one on each side next Spring and
remove that one large fan.... which leads to my next question. which
tool case combo to get.

I don't work on my cars that much.... only very basic maintenance like
oil changes and more of a weekend bolt-on tuner type. As you can see
in the picts (earlier posts), I have 2 small portable chests with 7 drawers
total and i need probably 1.5x that size to contain all the tools ive bought
recently.

Im thinking a 6drawer chest + 5 drawer (11 drawers) roll away should
do the trick. Ive been looking at the Craftsman ball bearing ones
as i can pick it up locally, but where else should I check for other
cases? I know HomeDepot carries Husky brand and Lowes carries
Kobalt. They seem to be okay... any suggestions? My budget is
tight.. $450 tops as there are other things i want to buy for the
garage and cars.

Harbor Frieght has a 11 drawer for $179.00. I wasn't willing to pay the big bucks being a shadetree mechanic. It's not the gauge of the Craftsman but in my opinion more than adequate for my needs. I've had it 6 months and am happy.

It's in the mail flyer now.

First off...... wow some great ideas and home shops here folks!!!

Thanks for the invite Ken.

Here's a shot of my place. It's a detached, attached 24x36 with what was going to be a woodshop on the side. The side is now a 16x16 greenhouse for the wife's orchids

Life is full of trade offs - she has her plants and I have my tools and diecast cars

Here is a shot from when the gang of slayers stopped in:

I so want to epoxy the floor, but we're all gravel in the drive and I already spend most of my time sweeping out the silt as it is

Maybe if we win the lottery, I'll pave the drive! That's the ticket.

thanks, i think i saw their recent flyer but i only saw their $399
one for the 13 drawer with ballbearings. the other chest and sides were
additional.

also, www.globalindustrial.com has nice onces too and about the same
price range as the Craftsman... only thing is that due to the wieght of
these cases, the freight is a whoppin' $120!! so i think
im going to go local...

since you're on the globalindustrial site, check out their Oscillating Wall Mount Fan ... yea not cheap.

Does anyone else have a LCD in their garage? Drive-In at home! What I would like is a sink in the garage... no need to run upstairs to wash my hands, or try to unravel the garden hose.

Sears flyer just came out for this Friday (Nov 3rd). See if there is anything here that might be useful. Scroll down to find more tools.

wow, that's over my budget for those fans. the towers i was looking at
is not as effective as these regular fans, but were like $50 a pop.

Im going to be running LCD and a home theater sound system in there
after i get the tool case and mobile cabinet.

thanks! the tool case listed is too small for me, but those
work gloves at $9.99 might be worth getting.

How is this to clean up? Can you sweep the surface and remove "fine" particle of dirt? Our tires bring so much dirt in with them, that after 4 days you could sandblast a small car with the sweepings

For the money, although mine's doesn't have as many buttons & ***** , I like the store brand of Best Buy's

Those leads hanging down are for the Roady home kit I've got mounted on the side of the garage.

It even has a Sub

Sorry for the photo quality but it's dark out there

I believe it is easier to keep clean than the bare concrete that was there before.

I usually don't sweep as it makes too much dust. I use a shop vacuum to pick up the dust and then mop it about once a week or so.

It mops a lot easier than the concrete. I've spilled a few things on it and they just mopped up with a paper towel.

I bought a small Yamaha system and 27" HDTV since that post.

The sound quality is much better than the radio I had out there before. The system has the capability of adding more speakers and a sub, but the two speakers that came with it sound pretty good to me.

The system included a DVD player. The cable company is coming this Friday to connect cable to the TV.

I am not sure how much use I'll get out of the TV as it is difficult to watch and work on the car at the same time. But, if something is on that I want to listen to (like Speed channel) I can have it on and glance at it once in a while.

I had the Italian Job playing last night when I was claying, polishing, and Z5'ing the car.
