cleaning the dust off the speedometer

Ok....I know this sounds crazy, but I haven't dusted my clear speedometer cover in a long while because i'm afraid of grinding the dust into the soft plastic clear cover and causing lil scratches...any recommendations?

Also, once it is clean, I was thinking of putting RainX on it to make it slipperry so it would be less apt to get scratched while cleaning or if someone sits in the Mini for the first time and says " OH!! the speedometer is in the center!" and then proceeds to touch the cover with their dry fingers and cause scratches( this has hapenned twice) ( so now I jump and block the speedo at the first sign of some one about to touch it)

Use a Pastry Brush - very soft bristles..

I use an ostrich feather duster, carry it in my car. You can also buy one of those cloths designed for use on eyeglasses and sunglasses, they won't scratch the anti-reflective coatings, so they should be safe for the Speedo. You're right to be careful, it's very delicate!

Open the sunroof and boot lid and drive very quickly in reverse - the dust blows off! Of course, it would be more practical and effective to adopt the suggestions above, albeit less fun. I also find that a well-moistened soft cloth works just fine.

has anyone used rainX or some sort of wax to make the speedo cover slippery and less apt to get those lil scratches?

I wouldn't do that with the RainX. I've heard of a product called Novus, or by Novus that's supposed to be good for those lenses. Try one of those car care sites like Autopia.

I use Zaino Z6 quick detailer. Works great. QD is perfect for this sort of thing.

I am as crazy as you about this! I use eyeglass cleaner and an eyeglass cloth, which is a light microfiber. You don't want to dust it off while it is dry and NEVER with paper!

One word for you...

SWIFFER

I keep one their little, disposable dusting wands next to my OXO car duster. They work like a feather duster except they trap the dust for you to remove from your car, instead of just spreading it around. When I quick-detail between weekend washes, I give the dash a quick swipe with the Swiffer and I'm back to new condition.

I'm planning on cleaning the gagues on my 7 year-old Altima with Meguiars Plastic-X. There are already several swirls and scratches, so I can't do that much dammage... I'll try to remember to report in on how it went.

Brad, I'll make you a deal...

I'll reimburse you for the Swiffers if you reimburse me for all of the products in my garage that I've picked up because of you... not to mention all of the stuff that I want and haven't had the chance to order...

I have used this tool to remove smudges on the speedo. It's intended use is on photographic glass, like lenses, but it will work great for your problem too. You can get it here for about $11.00.

Compressed Gas Air Duster and Novus 1 or Plexus

Hi everyone,

I would suggest first using a compressed gas air duster (like the type used for computer keyboards) to first clean off large particles and then wipe the surface clean with a plastic cleaner/polish like Plexus or Novus 1. Click here to learn more about Novus. Click here to learn more about Plexus.

Best regards!

I'd recommend the Zaino Z-14 but then people would say I'm just another one of those ZainoHeads...

I highly recommend Plexus for the tach & speedo. Spray on, wipe off. It looks like there's no plastic there when you're done.
