Keep brake dust of rims
#1
Hi All,
I read a post about this a while back, but I cannot seem to find it. There is a product that you can use on your rims so that brake dust is eithere repelled, or easily cleaned. Can anyone tell me what this product is? My frind's rims look totally black, as he drives around very hilly parts.
Thanks,
Nando

Here's a related thread that might give you a place to start.
You'll have to get the wheels clean, and then apply a coat of wax, zaino, rejex or a similar product to keep the dust off.

I've been using rejex and I really cant say that it works miracles or anything. Does it make it easier to clean? probably. but you still have to get every nook and cranny with a cloth (or whatever). It definitely does not just rinse away.
ok maybe I was expecting too much but hey, I'm a sucker for advertising

Use Meguiars NXT. Then maintain daily or every few days depending on amount of Brake Dust with Meguiars Quik Detail. That's how I do it. I've developed a technique using a small wheel brush and a blue paper towel to make wheel cleaning a simple 10 second procedure (for each wheel)--works with any wheel with large spokes--like the 5 stars. Just spray on Quik Detail, wrap wheel brush with paper towel, and wipe off the dust. It comes off with a single pass--the soft brush conforms to the wheel surface. Take the paper towel off, and clean off any missed areas. Flip it over and use on second wheel. One towel is good for 2 wheels--sometimes more depending on how dirty they are. Before I discovered this technique, I used between 2 and 4 paper towels for cleaning, my hands were black, and it took several minutes per wheel, and multiple passes.

Once I get a good coat of wax on the wheels I just dust daily with an old cotton ribbed t-shirt, I use the same shirt for months, shake it out after each wheel, kind of like a cali-duster. The dirter the shirt gets the better it works, just make sure the wheel is dry, because if it is wet the brake dust smears and you will have to wash to get it clean. You may want to get a pair of gloves just for dusting too, because once the t-shirt gets black the mositure in your skin will transfer the dust to your hands.

Aack! It's been over 2 weeks since I cleaned my wheels. I'm due to rotate tires also- maybe instead of cleaning, I should just swap fronts and rears, wait another week, and tell anyone who asks that I have special, anthracite "powder-coated" R85's.

I wax my wheels a few times a season and recently started using a product that seems to make a big difference improving even on the low dust brake pads. The product is from Cragar, the wheel people, the product is called Brake Dust Barrier. Just spray on and wipe off once every two weeks. I have had it on the wheels now for two weeks and it really does a great job.

Keep dust off rims:
Step 1 Get rid of stock brake pads (1 hour sweat labor)
Step 2 Clean (after 5k this took the most time) and wax wheels (2 hours sweat labor)
Step 3 Enjoy NOT having to scrub your wheels every week.
Whoever at BMW came up with that brake compound should be forced to clean all our wheels one time.

Just a tidbit that is probably known to one and all (...except it was unknown to me), but when I started using Klasse products (including on my wheels) I stopped using Simple Green to clean brake dust. Apparently Simple Green will strip All-In-One so now I simply spritz my wheels with water and wipe them clean. Works super! I just thought it's interesting how different products interact for good or ill.

Less brake dust-many options
So you are tired of brake dust on your rims?
Reduce the brake dust by changing to Mintex Redbox pads (lower cost) or EBC green pads.
If you have aftermarket wheels choose a design that is more open to allow the brake dust to not contact the wheel as much.
You can clean off brake dust easily with simple green.
You can wax with Wheelwax and that repells brake dust, you can pick it up from tirerack.com for about $15. It doesn't last forever but it is good (smells good too)
And you can brake less.

But as always, YMMV!

Get good low dust pads.
Clean wheels.
Wax with polymer (or whatever that stuff is) wax. Zaino, Zymol, etc. NOT Carnuba. Carnuba=brake dust glue.
Use Crager Brake Dust Barrier. (Yeah, I own the company.)
Depending on how dirty they are, use the dry wipe or quick detail spritz (like all them other guys said) touch up as required.
Don't buy white wheels!

First point; It's just a car. With that reasonable care applies. I can respect guys going over their car with a Microscope but is that for me? - nope.
I clean the brake dust off every wash. White wheels are an issue I don't have to deal with. People don't notice a little dust on gray wheels or a spec on the dash, they see and enjoy the car as a whole. I am tweaked about door dings and park in weird places. I keep the interior clean, wash her when needed and a couple coats of NXT a year is about right.
Find how to apply a balance of care for your car and avoid being a little too close to perfection with stupid stuff.
