Dent--can anyone figure out how this happened?

I came out of the PO the other day and noticed this dent. I'd never noticed it before, and neither had my husband--both of us wash the car. I still can't figure out how it can be RAISED on one side, and non-existent on the door side. There are a couple of small paint chips, too. It almost looks as if someone closed the door on a seatbelt, except that no one did, and the belt loopie is fastened so the buckle is higher than this.

At any rate, can it be fixed without replacing the car? Have any of you used a dent doctor for this kind of ding?

Somebody tried to break in to your car by prying it open.... You can talk to Dent Wizard (and I would) but me thinks you will need a good body shop to fix it right...

Yep, this is not a dent. It does seem like the door was slammed and hit an obstacle. A dent repair shop will not be able to fix it as the paint was broken and the damage is a bit creased. It can be fixed, but I would recommend a good body shop.

Judging by the convergence in the reflection it appears to be a singular impact. Like others have said, PDR won't likely be the solution. In this case, PDR (Paintless Dent Removal) isn't limited by whether there is paint loss or not--although that would determine the success of the repair--but on where this impact is. It's very difficult to push back or reform an edge using PDR techniques. I'm not a PDR expert though--maybe Kenchan can chime in here.

yep, as OG mentioned above, something got sandwitched when you
closed the door. that's a dent impact from the left side moving towards
the right. nearly impossible to fix completely with just PDR. that high
spot is too close to the edge and reinforced itself. your door is slightly
bent too.

body shop will probably take a knockdown tool with hammer and smack
it down, spot bondo, sand, and repaint.

A seat belt incident is, of course a logical thought, but neither I nor my husband has had one--only 2 possiblities. Unless...it was done at the dealer when I had it in for a couple of minor things last month. Hmmm. Sh^#. I'll bet that was it. I don't think either of us washed it right after that, and thus might not have seen it.

Sure would have been nice to see it back then...

OK, which one of you had trouble getting open your bottle of beer one late night? There you were, wishing for a cold adult malty beverage, you reach into the fridge and try to twist the top off. Realizing only cheap beer comes in twist off tops, you are on the hunt for a bottle opener. You stop to admire your MINI, it speaks to your soul, you calmly reach down and open the door, stick the bottle in the jam and pry off the top of your bubbly beverage.

Far fetched, but maybe that's what happened at the dealer?

Sigh. Guess I'll have to fix the ding Hubby got on the 5-series first. Damn, I wish people were more careful--this one's a real 1" gouge, plus paint. At least it's on the rear fender, so it's "only" $150.00. I told him that was his Christmas present this year, and he said that was fine. (I did get him a car detailing kit, too.)

Now you know what to do (put a little ding in the bumper) next time you're stumped on a present idea.

Well, his car really IS in pristine condition, except for that. He's been wanting to have it fixed, but just didn't want to spend the money. Christmas is sort of an impetus for that sort of thing, I guess.

(He's usually not so hard to shop for.)

Yeah, actually that's my dealer. I'm sure they'd just farm it out, though. My guess is that's a paintless dent remover company, which won't work on either car, unfortunately.

Side note--you ought to see the dent in the Bimmer's fender. I can't imagine the force it took for someone to gouge it with a door like that--maybe a husky teenager eager to hit the video game arcade?

You know, with the increase in list price for the '08s, it would be cheaper just to fix the ding. Then again, I could get the rear fogs, which is the ONLY thing I would change on a reorder.

As for the 530i, nope, I have a 30,000 mile old remanufactured engine in a 80,000 mile car--an '01 we got 6 years ago for $20,000. You don't find deals like that very often.

I think we're set for a while (hope so, anyway).

I thought there wasn't a base price increase on the '08s, just the package prices changed. Of course I found out I could have actually saved money by waiting ($500 or $600 I forget) after my order was already finalized and in production.

I'm not sure if there were price changes to the packages, but they did drop things from some of them, like no multi function steering wheel in the Premium package Which I guess is the same as an increase

I've got a chip in the same spot (other side though) from shutting something in the door (or trying to, anyway). But just a chip, no dent, thank god. It's on the list of Small Chips to be Repaired.

I did it right after I got it back from Richard after the Wood Chipper Incident.

That's why I use the little plastic slider thingie to keep the metal part out of the way. I can't explain why it didn't work in this case for the (presumably) careless dealer. (As I say, we didn't do it.)

Put a CG Lock on your belt and the weight will keep it out of the way of your door, lol.
