*%^^&!!! Got Rearended

Sorry about the title.

But why is it when the weather gets bad people tend to drive less safe than normal? Well, I was almost to work (2 blocks away) coming from Silver Spring to Alexandria and I get rearended at a stop light by a guy who wasn't even looking up when he hit me. the light turned green (I was the 4th or 5th car in line) I looked around then into my rearview and saw a guy not looking and BANG I couldn't get on the gas fast enough. By the time I saw him the the rearview he was already up my rearend (gross!!! That doesn't sound right.) By the time I saw him all I could do was brace for the impact because he was already there.

Well, from the look of it I at least need a new bumper cover. What do those run painted, any idea? I wonder if there is any substructure damage, foam, bumper frame etc. I'll see what his Insurance has to say.

Yup. Still drivable. Luckily (if I can say that) I was hit by an A4 so it was a bumper to bumper hit. I doesn't look like there is any body damage at first glance. So as far as I know there isn't any. It's covered in road/snow grime so I can't reall tell yet. But the boot works and looks straight, I think.

Don't even worry about how much its going to cost to fix, it was definatly the other drivers fault, so his insurance is going to pay for it. Hope everything works out in a spiffy jiffy.

Well... as dumb as that sounds, it's not as bad as having your 4 month old MINI getting hit in the rear while driving out in the middle of nowhere while going 50 mph because the dummy in the minivan was too busy playing with his cell phone.

Okay, I'm still pissed about that but back to you...

Might not appear to be any damage but check it out after you clean the car off really well. Hard to believe you don't have any scrapes or small impressions in the bumper cover.

And call it in to your insurance company anyway, just in case you find some hidden damage later. The other driver will be liable for your damages, regardless how minor they seem, you will not have to pay for them.

Oh, There's definitly a big imperssion from where he hit me in the bumper. BIG flat spot w/ BIG hexagonal marks. You can see where the bumper cover wrapped and creased and cut itself around the bumper structure/frame behind it. other than the bumper it doesn't look like anything else was hit. but who knows? like I said it's pretty dirty.

Sorry to hear that.
Look at the bright side, you're ok and may be a chance to get an aero kit.

Thanks Edge. The name of this thread is fine but can you just remove the thread w/ the F in the title. I just didn't want to make any one mad. It was posted just seconds before this one.

thanks

GC,
That sounds very similar to the damage I had on my rear bumper. My result was a $400 repair bill (the other driver's insurance paid it all, plus my rental car expense). I would imagine your bumber cover will need to be replaced as well.

It's amazing how effective the impact absorbers in the MINI bumpers are because the muffler is literally inches from the rear bumper and it wasn't even scratched, in my case.

So your total repair bill w/ the cover was 400? Did they replace the absorber behind the cover?

Very sorry about the accident. With all the postings about accidents in the past couple of weeks, I'm getting afraid to leave the parking lot!

I hope the repairs are quick!

Sorry to hear about your accident.

First, did you get yourself checked out?? you might feel fine now, but you might end up really sore later. Get yourself checked out.
Second, $400 sounds right for the repairs. they may not replace the bumper cover. that's what happened to me last year : https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...345#post927345

Good luck with the repairs!

Yep, somewhere in the neighborhood of four hundred. That was the price of a new bumper cover and the labor which included painting and clear coating.

I had no other damage, just the bumper cover.

Don't forget, your vehicle is an '03 so the liable party's insurance company may balk at putting a brand new bumper on yours. They may offer to use a recycled or replacement (non OEM) part. If that's the case and you want new, you should have that option but you will be responsible for the difference in cost. Or, as pointed out by MM2005, they may decide to repair your bumper cover.

2 Years ago when I got my rear bumper skin replace it ran around $375. That was a new bumper, painted, installed. My car was about 2 months old at the time so the paint was still also new, so the shop bought a new bumper and painted it, all I had to do was show up to have it installed.

Keep in mind the bumper is not painted, it's a metal fixture that spans the rear of the car underneath the bumper skin. The painted part is just a 'bumper skin' that is primarily a decorative cover. That metal bumper underneath needs to be checked at a minimum. If the metal bumper is untouched then you might be fine with just a skin. If the metal bumper is bent, there's the possibility of the unibody or other damage. I'd get her checked carefully.

Make sure your exhaust wasn't damaged either. Mine was when I got rear-ended.

Yeah, oddly enough, my heat shield wasn't even damaged when I got rear-ended. That thing looks like it's made of aluminum foil so that will tell you something about MINI engineering. I was doing 50 at the time and I would estimate the guy that hit me was doing 60, so it was the equivalent of a 10 mph impact.

Someone ran me completely off the road just this morning. I tell you, people are lucky that I'm a good driver. Statistically speaking, with my 75 mile commute every day, I'm supposed to chew it eventually. :impatient I've had mine for almost a year now & haven't been plowed into yet. Though I come close 1-2 times a week. Usually, it's someone who hasn't had their coffee yet, & they don't look where they're going. I know the feeling that insurance coverage won't entirely restore the car to it's previous state. Good luck and I'm glad you weren't hurt.

From the look of it I was hit right in the bumper. My main concerns are the bumper frame behind the cover, the car frame and the exhuast and my back, it's sore as hell. I got check out this afternoon and was given some Rx's.

Any ideas who I should take it to, to get checked? I mean I'm sure my insurance company will do a great job, I hope. I'm going through mine who in turn will get his Insurance Co. That's proper procedure right? I haven't been in an accident in a long time. so, I have forgotten.

I wish it weren't so damn cold out, I'd jack it up and check out the exhaust. I'm guessing removing the bumper cover before Insurance takes a look at it is a bad idea. So, I won't do that. Like I said it's to cold anyway.
