Replacing Brakes and Rotors

How hard is it to replace the brakes on rotors on a 2006 mini cooper s? I contacted the dealership and they want 1200.00 just to do the front brakes. I can buy EBC Slotted and drilled rotors with green stuff brake pads for 400.00.

If it is not different than any other disc brakes I cannot see why they want to charge me so much? I am all for tackling this job myself or with a little help if anyone would like to help me out.

I think my brakes got worn because when I bought the car used, I did not notice a little flaw with the e-brake. Apparantley when I released the brake it goes down like it is completely disengaged, the light turns off and everything. But it I hit the button on the lever again it will fall another inch or so and be completely released.

Well I drove my car in this "almost off" posistion for 3 months before the brake light turned on. I was thinking to myself wow the brakes need to be replace already... come to find out, I have been burning off my back brakes for 3-4k miles...

Thanks in adavance

Easy if you're mechanically inclined. I did mine in an afternoon.

Only problem with this theory, the e-brake is on the back wheels. If left slightly engaged it would cause drag on the rear brakes, not the fronts.

The MINI's brake job is indeed a good DIY money saver. Not hard at all.

I did mine in a few hours. My car's ebrake goes down another click after the light goes off. That doesn't mean the ebrake is still on.

Ya I figured it was the back brake that is used for the e-brake, but the mini dealership just quoted a front brake cost and that was as far as the conversation went.

I could feel a difference in the one click further. It felt like a release, when I was driving the replace brake warning light came on, the first thing I thought was "is my ebrake still on?" So I hit the button and I could feel the car breath a sigh of releif. Since my car only has 40k on it, I thought that was a little early for the brakes to be worn out, maybe I am wrong. But I figure while im doing one I may as well do the other.

But thanks for the heads up on it being a fairly easy job, now I just a plce to work on it.

Thanks again.

The "stealership" quoted me $600 to do the front brakes. We just replaced the pads, but still, $1200 is high.

That is WAY out of line. Where do you live and perhaps someone on the board can help you with an alternative shop or an offer to help you do it yourself.

It really is easy and with the money you save you can get yourself a pressure bleeder, quality jack and stands, a set of rear caliper reversers and have plenty left over for beer and incidentals.

Where in the area are you located? I'm just south of Annapolis and if you provide the parts I can to it no problem. If you want me to get everything that isn't an issue either. Pm me and we can work out details.
