K&N stock filter replacment - worth it?

Im looking to replace my '05 air filter in my MC (5-spd) with a K&N version. Is it worth spending the $50cdn on this filter? What is the horsepower gain..3-4hp? Is there a sound and fuel efficiency benefit?
Im not looking to mod my car too much as im leasing, plus I don’t want to have any headaches within my warranty time period.
This is the link to the K&N mini filter http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...x?Prod=33-2885
Anybody have any dino results??

Paul I had a panel kilter in my 04MC and I replaced it with an AFE CAI. If you want to stay with K&N try this one out other MC owners have got it and like it.

Yeah that one looks good too!
Im just worried about ripping out the whole stock air box and putting one of these in (again, the factory warranty issue).
Is there much of a difference between that and the straight k&n factory replacment option? (besides the obvious looks).

If you're looking for a performance or sound gain, don't do it. If you're looking for a one time, clean every once in a while filter, go for it.

The K&N OEM replacement filter is nice, but not as a performance mod.

The panel filter is nice but the air flow is greater in the 57i it will give you a slight increase in hp and the nice sound of air being sucked in.Also your mpg will increase by 2-3. I like my upgrade now for a exhaust I might get the Megan they are going to have a group buy for $350 shipped!

I'd say the HP increase from any panel filter is likely to be about 0-0 HP.

The August issue of Grassroots Motorsports mag. did a great story on common Cooper mods and dyno'd them all one at a time. The ITG panel filter dyno'd out at 1/2HP gain- well within the margin of error for their Dyno set-up. Hence no real performance benefit. Check it out.

All;

The one thing that everyone emphasizes in an air filter upgrade / mod is the difference at peak HP....BFD. The main reason you put a free flowing filter in any car is to improve TORQUE ! The Mini has a reputation with having a slight "bog" at full throttle from a standing start; any thing that improves torque helps this problem. A perf. filter helps remove this restriction.

BTW, I read that Grass Roots Racing article too....since they race in a model class that allows very few mods, they felt it was worth the expense to upgrade to the stock filter, granted results vary according to how well the mfg. designed the original stock intake.

Anyone who tells you there is a meaningful increase in power (HP or torque) from a panel filter is oiling your snake

YES! Do it!

The first thing I did was put in a K&N drop in replacement. I clean it every 3000 Miles. MY personal view is that I get more power, but it's very easy to fool yourself into thinking that way, so it may not be true.

But At least I have not had to keep buying new paper filters! I have only had to buy 1 replacement cleaner kit. They last a long time.

Most of the performance air filters out there do flow more air, the question is does the increase in airflow result in a measurable increase in power? I have tested regular paper filters vs. K&N's for some battery box enclosures at work, which were going to require air cooling in a dusty environment. The measured CFM's through the box with the K&N was more than with the paper equivalent. They have a similar test setup at the counters of Advanced Auto Parts now, where you can switch the filters to see the difference.
Now, the Mini has a fairly small filter, so the difference in airflow may not measure up enough to show an increase in power. It certainly will not result in a decrease in power though, and when it gets dirty, you can clean it.

I put the Alta panel filter in my MC and have to say that my "seat of my pants" dyno couldn't feel a difference, so I can't say that there was any difference in power, however, I can say that throttle response is slightly better in the low rev range. There is a slight change in noise with the bonnet up. Other than that, it's a cleanable filter that I don't have to throw away. Only $30 USD so, what $40 CND?

Alta claims consistent 3 hp gains. 3hp a machine can feel, but again, the butt-dyno you sit on will feel nothing. I think that it's worth it. Which reminds me, I have to clean that thing.

Green air filter

I switched out my stock filter for a green panel filter. The box says it will give you up to 8 hp more, but I'm sure that is BS. I did notice an increase in lower rpm torque though. A smoother ride as well as a better and slightly louder sound. I did it for the increase in mpg, but It definitely has a difference in power.

You might get 2HP at the high RPM, where the motor is not getting all the air it could use through the paper panel filter, but there is no way you are going to (a) get a noticable difference in performance, or b) get any improvement whatsoever at low rpm.

It is easy to delude yourself that a little more noise means more power, and all intake filter replacements fall into the same category of snake-oil...

When you install a new air filter, remember that part of the performance increase you might notice is the difference between the old, dirty filter and the new, clean one.
