After market header on a Cooper (non-S)...Anyone have one? Thoughts appreciated...

I am considering a header (probably OBX if and when they become available again). And I just found out no more e-check in my county . So if and when I do this mod, will it be best to eliminate the cat altogether? Will that make the car unbearably loud? I am just looking for input from any other MC owners who have done a header to hear what their thoughts are on performance gains, did you keep the cat or not, how is the noise, what type of header did you get???? Thanks for any and all replies.

On the cvt we had the milltek header which comes with a cat, but the one considerable difference is that you are sacrificing low end torque for top end power, which is really noticeable in the MC. so i would say get an aftermarket exhaust if you do anything at that end, i had the helix13 and it was loud as hell! I have heard wonderful things about the Borla though. Hope this helps,
Ben

Even with no yearly emission checks, any OBD-II vehicle is its own check station with the two O2 sensors. Removing the cats will trigger a CEL unless you also install an O2 sensor eliminator.

I forgot to mention, I already have an Rspeed exhaust and BMP intake. That is why the header seemed like the next logical step.

MC header

I installed a Megan racing header. I have been advised by several people that removing the cat is a bad thing. THe ECU depends on the measurements coming form the two O2 sensors to tell it how to adjust the fuel air mixture. Yout ake it out and the sensors start throwing codes. I had a Maganflow hi-flow cat welded in and it works great. Let me know if you have any other questions. Also Randy Webb can give you more details about the whole thing!

How do you like the Megan header? Nice sound? Any noticeable performance gains?

Instead of removing the cat, I would recommend getting a header w/ a bigger cat (freer flowing). That way it still will pass emmisions, and work better.

I have a Megan header and an OBX, I'd say the difference will be determine by which exhaust system you are using, the Megan would work with any 2.25" exhaust and the OBX would be use with a 2.5" exhaust.
I haven't bought my exhaust but if I buy Milltek, I'll be using the OBX.
For Borla I'll use the Megan.
The problem with OBX it doesn't have the flex section, so I'll have to buy one and fabricate it, so the OBX will end up costing me more than the Megan once it's installed.

I'm running the Milltek header on my non-S. I even had it mated to the stock muffler for a week. It really wasn't much louder until you were up past 4500 RPMs, then it would roar;-) With a Magnaflow on there, it's loud all the time... in a good way;-) If you're concerned about losing low end torque, get the MTH "Tuner File" & that will straighten it right out. If you want to run the Megan (or any header w/o cat), Volker @ MTH can deal with the Oxygen sensor w/o cat setup.

OBX when they become available? They are all over ebay.
