which is best intake for r50?

which is the better intake system for an 02 r50.

DDM cold air intake or the K & N typhoon?
Everything under the hood is stock as well as my exhaust and air filter.

In all of my research I found that the stock air box with a K&N drop in is the best setup.

DDM is the only "CAI" system in the market for R50's you can also use an Alta panel filter in the OEM box.

Yeah, not true...

I have a K&N Typhoon CAI. I absolutely love it! Just as good as the previously mentioned brands!

Here is mine:

Well, I think that based on the picture, you and I both have what's called a "hot-air intake". The "cold-air intake" has a cover protecting the filter so that the engine air (which is hot) doesn't make it into the throttle body. Only the air from outside, thus making it a CAI.

HAI is open filter; both outside air and engine air get sucked in... I think.

Here's mine: aFe intake - old as hell.

Something else that you can do - if you want sound - is get just a filter (not the full intake kit) that can connect to the stock hoses. I bought a replacement K&N filter and ended up putting it on my dad's Cooper. The power gains is small, but the sound is really nice.

Hope this helps,
Leo.

PS: The hose has a 2.5" diameter.

heh, just as I though. Mixed responses.
I've heard good things about both the K&N drop and as well as the DDM CAI.
I want more MPG so whichever gives me that. More sound wouldn't be a turn off though and neither would power

Yes.

i have the k&n typhoon short ram intake,i think for the price you cant go wrong with it,but at high speed im sure the short ram wont have enough air going in,but it does make good sound when the butterfly valve opens!!

I've had both the K&N drop-in and now the DDM CAI. Prefer the DDM by far. If you want a very slightly used K&N drop in for an R50 (2006), let me know. I'll sell the one I have.

Hey Gang, I run the K&N Typhoon on my R50 too and love it. As for cold air or hot air IMHO it's all air. Sitting in traffic it's hot and hotter then we would like, but once the car is moving it cools off to near outside temps. Plus the ECU is always adjusting for temp.

Granted having a true "CAI" would be the greatest it's not that much better then a HAI or a drop in filter.

If sound is the goal the DDM and K&N are great. If moneys tight think about the Alta or K&N Drop In's. While DDM and K&N can show dyno numbers they are not always something people will feel with a butt dyno so I try to not over sell the HP gains.

As to MPG it's more about how you drive then just the filter. If I drive right I can get 35+ if I drive at redline I get high 20's.

I was reading about the K&N typhoon intake on K&N's website. It was saying at 5,900 you only get 4.02 HP. That doesn't seem like much for the money. I never each thath high of RPM. The highest I typically go is 3,500 and 4k at most. I've only ever hit 5k but a few times so I don't think I would ever feel the extra 4 HP....
Does that sound right? I thought they were supposed to add like 10 HP..?

So is the DDM CAI is not any better or worse than the K&N Typhoon intake?

If you drive conservatively thats fine, you would not need, nor feel any performance mods anyway if you drive easily all the time. The MPG gains aren't crazy either, but it all helps. The whole point of a CAI is to help the engine breathe more easily which gives a bit more hp, a bit more mpg, and gives a sound worth it all.

ITG drop-in. Entertained the idea of getting a "real" intake system but decided against it.

Yeah, I just looked at the injen intake.
I'm now leaning more towards the afe. I like the blue filter the best and it's the cheapest. Plus, it comes with the heat shield. Free shipping from autoanything. Should I get the dry one or the oil one? I've heard about the oil messing with the maf - causing dirt to build up.

i'm in this dilemma too, i'm thinking maybe a K&N or a Green Cotton Filter drop in to start, or a random cone filter HAI DIY job!

I started with the ALTA drop in and wasn't disapointed. MPGs went up for sure. Didn't notice much else though.

I don't recommend a HAI as it will rob you of performance. You want as much cold/cool air getting into your engine, not hot.

Dont count out the AFE CAI. I love it. Paired with my Megan Exhaust, my car is a monster when it comes to sound. Performance gains are minimal (1-5hp) with all intake and exhaust R50 mods. The AFE is really easy to install (i wrote a how to) and its a great product. 150 bucks is a great price as well

I almost bought the AFE but glad I didn't. The design is sub-par compared to the DDM. It uses the stock ribbed inlet tube connecting to the throttle body and it isn't exactly a straight shot to the throttle body. It is shaped like an S where as the DDM includes a new tube which goes right to the thottle body, thus less restrictive. However, It's not like it's gonna give you a ton more HP but it will yield a couple more (1-3). Plus, I think the filter for the DDM is slighty larger but don't quote me. Haven't compared both in person, just going by pictures...however misleading that can be. If I'm wrong, please correct me

As far as sound, I'm really happy with the DDM. Sounds beastly. I doubt the AFE will sound any different or louder for that matter.

But, all preference. I like the look of the AFe vs DDM. And if you got it for $150 then that was cheaper than the $188 I paid for my DDM.

Go with the our Way/DDM Intake. Here is the dyno graph, obviously the higher one is with the intake, the other is the stock intake.
Check out the torque gains, and the comparison was done just by changing the intake while the car was straped to the dyno so the conditions were the same, no faking here.

My friend has the WAY/DDM, i have the AFE. I gotta say, I like the look of the DDM. And the Dyno doesn't lie. As long as you get SOMETHING, you will be set. Go get the Way/DDM. Way is the coolest and he will take care of you.
