I love the Congress, get a Lake View Room and enjoy Grant Park and the Lake at your feet, walk to everything and be sure to take your Mini for a drive up Lake Shore Drive to the North Shore.
I went to St Louis 4th of July 2003 and it was the BEST ever. Your city knows how to do party on the 4th of July.
Enjoy your time in our great city, Dustin

Stay here:
Hotel Burnham
http://www.burnhamhotel.com
It's a great hotel located in a very historic Chicago building. Many years ago, the whole building was restored. I think you'll find the rooms very unique, many with great views of State Street.
Enjoy your stay in Chicago! And by all means, if you have the time check out the Chicago auto show, I think it's the largest one in the country.

Well I haven't been in this hotel but Starwood Hotel aka W Hotel *i think* is pretty nice, they have one located on the lakeshore. http://www.starwoodhotels.com/whotels/
Try Michigan Avenue for shopping purposes, Millenium Park for a nice park. Hm what else, you could check out the Sear's Tower. I don't know what else since i dont go downtown much.

House of Blues gets my vote--very, very funky, close to everything, (right off Michigan avenue--this is where you're going to want to be) and if you're lucky, they might have a great concert going on when you're there (they get outstanding acts--and depending on the act, you might get free tickets with your reservation). Impossible not to have a good time there.
Swiss Hotel is also very nice, close to Michigan Avenue and the Navy Pier, but it's more modern/upscale rather than outright funky.
But you definitely want to stay near Michigan Ave./Rush street--that's where all the fun is. You can even check out the Bentley dealership....
