April 30 (Wednesday) - Twisty/Scenic Caravan to MOTD from Chatanooga, TN

For all of you coming from the southeastern states, I'm setting up a caravan that will take some beautiful twisty roads through the mountains, over the Cherohala Skyway and into Fontana. I lead 10-15 MINIs through this route in 2006 and we had a great time! Join us and start your MOTD 2008 experience early!

DOWNLOAD A COMPLETE SET OF DRIVE INSTRUCTIONS AND MAPS HERE: http://www.focusoa.com/MOTD/CherohalaSkywayRun2008.pdf

We will meet up in the back parking lot of a McDonalds in Cleveland, TN... about 20 miles north of Chatanooga, TN. Please get gas before we leave! We will be in some remote areas. (Address: 2365 Apd 40, Cleveland, TN - At the top of the hil, near the intersection of 60 and 64 on the Cleveland bypass). Please be ready with a full tank of gas. Some food and a bathroom break would be a good idea too... It's gonna be a while before we stop again.
11am: Head out from McDonalds. We drive to Ducktown, TN and then up to Tellico Plains via some great twisty roads that I found on a motorcycle cruising website. We then cross the Cherohala skyway which has some stunning views along with radical elevation changes and beautiful twisty roads.
2:30-ish: Arrive in Robbinsville... a good place to get gas and grab some groceries for the week. From here it's a self-drive to Fontana or where ever you might be staying. I usually stop at a large gas station/grocery/gift shop to refuel and pick up supplies then head to Fontana. I'd be happy to lead anyone who is new to the area or 'map challenged' the rest of the way (20-30 minutes) if they don't mind stopping with me.

(The green blob in the top right is Smoky Mountain National Park)

I'm happy to have as many people along who want to join in! It was a STUNNING drive in 2006 and a great way to start the event early. Beautiful scenery combined with twisty roads... what else could you ask for (we will stop occasionally so we can enjoy the scenery but keep focused on the roads when motoring)?

Here is a list of the folks who have mentioned that they are interested:

- agranger
- 2 or 3 other MINIs from Dallas, TX
- yumyumdriver
- bainjs
- thulchatt
- jst4fun

Bump for the photos of the 2006 run and Yahoo map of the route so you can see the twisty roads we are headed towards! The tan blob of a city in the lower left hand corner of the map is Chatanooga, TN.

We'll be coming from Sewanee, TN and hope to catch up with you in Cleveland. My parents live there.

Add me to the drive.
Living in the area I can't pass up a chance to take this drive with my MINI friends.

This drive is ON! I'll be doing it regardless... it's a beautiful road and a great way to start the MOTD experience.

My contact info (cell #, etc.) is in the PDF link in post #1, above. Be sure to print a copy out and bring it along, just in case you want to separate from the group to have more time somewhere or in case you are late!

The full instructions and maps are in the PDF link in post #1. It's still a beautiful drive, even if you have to do it alone!

This is still on! Would love to have more MINIs join us! Just look at the squigly nature of the purple line on the map of post #1! It's one cool, hella-twisty route!

Dave,

See ya there. Enjoy the route! It's the same one we used in 2006, but this is the first time that I wrote up the instructions, so the mileages might not be exact.

It's a bit out of your way, but it could be done. The caravan I'm driving with on Tuesday is coming right through Memphis and heading to a southern suburb of Nashville for the night. We are swinging down to Cleveland for this route, so I obviously think that it's well worth the extra time/miles.

You could join us on Tuesday on our way through, if you want, or head out early on Wed and get with us in Nashville or Cleveland.
