Two-way Radios

Looking to pick up a set of two-way radios for the dragon and for any other time when they would come in handy. So I was wondering what everyones thoughts were on the different ones available? Any brands to watch out for, any specific features I want to get?

I saw in another post that I want to be sure to have sub channels, is this the same as privacy channels?

After much looking around I am thinking about these ones here:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1134704189772

Any feedback on anything pertinent to two-way radios would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Theo

Myself, I'm a Radio Shack nut. I bought my pair there last summer.

Has subchannels and feel solid. No problems so far. Need to buy a car charger though for longer trips.

These have been working really well for me:

Cobra PR 4700-2 WX VP MicroTalk FRS/GMRS 2 Way Radio two pack with up to 12 mile range

$50 and they work as weather radios as well!

I picked mine up from Walmart as well, 10mi Cobras for 45$.

Though, upon reading the manual it says that you need a license to use GRMS frequencies?! Is that true? Like an updated HAM radio license of sorts?

shankrabbit. . .

Here is how I look at it. . . .

If I needed some sort of special $75 license to use a $20 walkie talkie from Wal-Mart, they would have asked to see it before selling it to me!

something about you have to buy a license from the FCC in order to use channels 8-14. it's around $75 i think. sounded lame to me.

I went into Radio Shack last week to buy a headset for the Radio Shack FRS radio's I've got. They're "special" headsets (the standard cell phone headset I've got won't work), and cost $25! That's more than I paid for the radios! So, now I'm looking for a set with either a standard headset jack, or ones bundled with a headset. Any thoughts on that, folks?

I did a ton of internet research in January '05 on this. Owner reviews, etc. Decided on Midlands.
Check froogle.com for "midland radio" for suppliers.
Check Amazon for alternatives; they have lots of user reviews.
Get the optional accessories pack, with battery packs & recharger, car connector, hands-free sets.
Any radio over minimal power, and those with privacy/subchannels, "require" the FCC licence. Of the many users I know, one has purchased the license. Price goes up every year. No scofflaw has been chased down and prosecuted.

I know I'd be the unlucky one to have the FCC show up at my doorstep and fine me for not having a license. "Cuff 'em!"

Me: "So what are you in for?"
That one guy: "Murder, how about you?"
Me: "No FCC license on GMRS frequencies."
That one guy: "AGH!!! STOP TALKING TO ME, FREAK!!!"

Thats almost as bad as getting pulled over by a police conversion van, IMO.

Camo covers?! Excellent! ;-)

I'm making a run there tonight, actually, for some Dragon essentials. I'll probably pick up a pair of these then.

I got a set at Costco for $50. The set included 2 chargers, 2 headsets, 2 belt clips, and 2 extra covers. I used them on a MINI run yesterday (The Ad Agency Run) and they worked perfectly. They are Motorola Brand.

FRS Radios

Split the cost and ownership of these with fellow CMMC member. Only use them a couple of times a year. Cheap and reasonably effective. If you can get a set with two chargers, it's probably a better way to go.

I'm glad I did a search before I posted the same topic. This thread has been super helpful. I was also wondering the same thing about the FCC license for the GPRS radios. I found this FAQ link from one of the Best Buy products you guys posted.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site//olspage...9473&type=page
It says that you only need a license if you use the GPRS channels on the radio. If you just stick to the FRS channels, then you don't need the license. On the plus side, if you do decide to get a license, it is good for 5 years and covers your entire family.

I always forget that Costco has electronics. I did a search on the Costco website and found this bundle http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product...rodid=11124683
