Tire size

well, I think I rotated the Goodyear run-flats for the last time this last weekend at 24k miles. I guess I could use them till fall, but I don't think I can tolerate the roar anymore.
Current tire size is 225/50-18. I have been thinking about going up a size to 235/50-18.
Anyone with a Countryman S all 4 running running the size 235/50-18. Several types of Michelin's I can pick from in the 235 size,
It's not much of an increase, just a little wider and 26.9 to 27.3 in diameter.
Just wondered if anyone is running that size on stock wheels

You shouldn't have any issue running the 235s on stock wheels. I run after market 18X8.5 with 245/45s. I have a thread with pix on my F60 on here somewhere. Good luck.

I have Michelin Pilot Sport AS 4+ tires in 225/50/18 on 8" wide rims and they are the sweet spot for me. If you have 7.5" width wheels, you are on the low side of the range acceptable for the 235 section width tires. Most online sites put the acceptable rim width at 7.5, 8.0, and 8.5. This makes a surprising difference in handling as it affects the tires' sidewall. The more upright, the better. If the tire is pinched it may cause some minor tire squirm which presents as a slight vagueness in the steering when charging around your favourite highway onramp. This should only be important to you if you regularly push the car.

But (and why not since the speedometer error is minimal?) if looks are important to you, then you should definitely go with the 235s as they will add a bit of subtle width to the car. Interestingly, the variance from one manufacturer to another means that there are small differences in tire dimensions, even when the specifications are the same. Similarly, some manufacturers (notably Michelin) make tires with a "squarer" cross section and they therefore look meetier.

Thanks Eric, Thanks Mudbuddah. That what I was looking at, the Michelin Pilot sports AS. I'd like the summer ones, but I think it would be more prudent to go with AS.
They should be quiet.
I'm pretty sure the wheels are 8 inches wide. I'll check that.
I appreciate the advice, 235 isn't much of a stretch, should drive good.
Looking forward to getting new tires

changing the tire size like that, ever so slightly...do you have to get the speedometer adjusted or is the effect minimal?

There are lots of really good online tire size calculators out there. The one I link to below shows a -1.44% difference in indicated speed. Negligible.

I'm guessing 245/45/18 is too much for you? According to the calculator, it's closer in diameter .66%

@Seabiscuit have you thought of 245s?

https://www.calculator.net/tire-size...2&y=35#compare

It's pretty close

I did think about the 245, but it left my mind pretty quickly, miniRogue. I don't have 8.5 inch wide wheels. I was kinda worried I didn't have 8 inch wheels! That 245 size I think is more readily available and would be nice. 245/40-18 are the fronts on my Lexus.
I went out and measured the wheels on the Countryman, they are, a little over 8 inches, so I bet it's 8 exactly. You saw that mudBuddha says, he runs the 245's on his Countryman, but purchased the wider 8.5 inch wheels.
I have the 'dual spoke' style. Like this

gosh that was a huge pic.
Well, you get the idea.
Couple tire plug kits and an air compressor, and I'm haulin' the mail.
Have a good one. I'll take a pic when I get the new tires. I just did new brake pads last weekend and they were not half-worn.
I had the wheels off so I rotated them, they needed it too.

Have a good one !

@Seabiscuit interesting....I have aftermarket 18x8s... so maybe 245s are an option. I'll have to look up MadBuddha. Thank you.

PM replied. I believe 245s will work on 8" wide rims also...maybe go lower on side wall like 40 instead of 45. Play around with different set up and you can see the difference...remember to stay within 3% of overall tire circumference and you should be ok. Mines is a 4WD so the more reason to stay within the 3% delta.

Btw, after 20K or so miles, the brakes rotors and pads are just worn and nasty - spirited driving by the wife may have something to do with that, but yeah, decided to change/upgrade rotors and pads. Now it drives and brakes like a dream ! I have been lazy to put up some pix and the diy stuff but maybe I will find some time to do it. Anyway, off topic but the wheels / brakes altogether look really nice as well as functional in performance gain are my points.

I think OEM CM wheels are 7.5 wide on 50 aspect side wall...245 is too wide and tall. 235 will be the widest on 7.5 set up. Post some pix afterwards.

I was wondering what size you had gotten. I'm in the same boat looking for tires. So far, i'm leaning towards 235 x 45 x 18 ...please let me know..thanks

Hey ffchun : You know I was all revved up to purchase last June. Yeah I delayed.
I rotated the tires and they are quieter somewhat. Surprised me. Drives better also.
Then a rock hit my windshield, put a hairline crack across the top, and a small on in the driver side upper corner. These cracks are not in my view. Unfortunately, here in Virginia we have state inspection.
The inspection sticker ran out in august. I haven't driven it that much since then. I can run into neighboring states okay, but I only drive in late evening here in Virginia with the expired sticker.
I haven't bought any tires yet, but if I do I am thinking about the Michelin Primacy tour a/s .
Probably a boring tire but quiet, they have a 235/50 r 18. I 'd like that 235/45R 18 but it may require a wider rim.
I changed the oil in the mini in august and parked it. Sad isn't it.

I have to find someone that knows windshields for countryman. sorry I'm not much help.
Let us know what tire you buy,
best regards
biscuit,

Hey Seabiscuit...Thanks for the reply. It was helpful in making my decision about the 235 x 45 x18 on 18" rims. I will probably go with the Michelin Sports...
