Question: Are all F-series wing / outside mirror assemblies the same? Part numbers are different but they look the same down to mounts and wiring harnesses. Need to replace one and noticing that Countryman mirrors tend to cost considerably more than Cooper mirrors, even used.
Side Question: I have a 3-pin mirror (auto dip, no excitement package, no power fold) -- will a 5-pin mirror install in its place? I don't care if it doesn't project the MINI logo or power fold.

Reason: Added side question
They changed the style of the mirror starting 2020. There's a flatter edge on the rear of the mirror cap that wraps around to the sides. Not sure if the change is just the caps or the entire assembly.

Ahhh… OK, I see what you mean about the flatter edge… guess I wouldn’t want two different mirrors unless I can transplant the cap but the mounting point looks identical.
The way I understand it the 2020 cap/cover doesn't pop off like it did prior to that model year. For 2020 you actually have to remove the mirror glass to get to screws in the cap.

NOT TRUE, the cap just pops off, did it on my 2020 JCW Countryman and changed the red caps to the JCW cap.
Hmm. Maybe I'll try again someday then. I definitely broke a clip or something and that was enough for me to stop trying to get it off. I added red stripes instead.
Public Service Announcement: 3-pin and 5-pin mirrors are not electrically compatible, despite having the same wiring harness. 3-pin has three wires to what I'm guessing is a tiny control module which daisy-chains two wires from it to the defroster element. 5-pin has five wires -- three wires going directly to the power mirror motor and two to the defrost.
Plugging the 5-pin mirror into my 3-pin socket makes that mirror go into the tilt down position and all the windows stop working. Trying to see if I can swap out the vital bits but may have to buy a real 3-pin mirror.
