Puzzled by 2018 Lighting Changes

I'm puzzled by the rational of the 2018 nighttime lighting changes, now that I can see what they are.

Plenty of BMW orange remains, but now, instead of the HUD and central digital cluster turning a matching orange at night, which was very clever, they now remain white, even at night. HOW IS THIS BETTER?

I'm hoping I can code it back to how it was pre-2018.

Well, at least we've still got orange backlight for most of the central luster! Don't understand why it doesn't change on the HUD though. It would be easier to read at night IMO!

BTW...when I checked the exterior back moldings yesterday, the top part just under the spoiler lip wiggles with little pressure side-to-side. Bottom part seems stable but not confident that will remain.

I can tell you, white in the HUD at night IS distracting, and orange was much better. It just baffles the mind why/how someone at BMW thought this is somehow an improvement.

Can't remember when I test drove the demo in June if the HUD display was orange or white. Looks like I probably won't be using it at night then since white lights I find difficult to read for me.

Meant to ask you if you had upgraded to IOS 11 regarding issues with CarPlay. I did not and won't since it's beta upgrade and I understand that people are having issues with it trying to connect to Mini's app. I always wait for the bugs to get worked out before I upgrade my iPhone.

Tomorrow is the DAY! About time!

IOS11 is officially released now, and yes I have. That could be to blame, no question. I have an Apple Watch, too, and I think it is the actual problem here. It keeps trying to snag control.

Congrats on the delivery. Pictures!

I know you can still revert back to IOS 10.3 at the moment. Not sure how long that is going to be available to do though, so third party apps will work. Google iDrop newsletter.

Thanks! Can't wait and will post photos

BMW Orange at night in the HUD is the only way I can use it. Have to agree with OP. I would be surprised if there isn't an option to change it.

Perhaps the light control is set to AUTO? If you change to parking lamps or headlights the HUD might turn to orange. Just a thought.

I recently read that BMW M- models also have this "feature". Phooey!

I have an '18 with the HUD. Daytime HUD is white, while at night the HUD is orange.

If it's a 2018, I don't see how. They changed it for July Builds. They even bragged about the change in the press-release of upcoming changes. I've read that it's not codable, but that actually surprises me, if so.

My '18 was built in June, right before the change. I even have the driving modes on the shifter ring before the July changes.

Doesn't that make it a "2017"?

Well, in any case, I noted earlier that this was one of the July-Build changes they'd announced earlier, but I don't understand what motivated them to do this.

No, that just makes it an early 2018 build.

I agree with you, I think it was a silly change that doesn't make sense.

Actually thats a '17 (technically it SHOULD be called a 2017.5 as '17 vehicles usually came out around Sept 2016, but the '17 CMs didn't hit until almost Q2 2017). The '17 CMs were only built from roughly Feb 2017 to June 2017 with the 2018s starting with July 2017 builds.

The 17's had the ring around the gear shift, the 18s moved it to the center console, as well as offering lighting changes, and the addition of CarPlay.

Source: GF has a late June '17 CMS.

Mini says it's an '18, Insurance says it's an '18, Title says it's an '18, window sticker says '18.

But yeah, It should be a '17.5.

Wow OK, thats REALLY weird, as Mini themselves posted a bulletin/press release stating those changes would come in the 2018 models, with the 2018s starting with the July builds... Sounds like you have a 2017 "build"...sold and badged as a 2018. My guess is it was built right before the tooling switchover but was somehow coded right afterwards? I bet that's quite rare.

Do you have CarPlay by chance?

Don't have CarPlay, and happy about that.
After I put my order in, they changed the options and moved stuff around. That perhaps uncommon, but not unheard of in the automotive world.

Either way, I like the car just the same.

Yeah, totally sounds like you got a 17, but somehow it was badged as an 18. Not uncommon, but probably a bit rarer.

That is exactly what our does, (its a 17) Checked it tonight. I know it doesn't help, but it's very nice. I like the orange glow, when set low. Wifey drives the center console for me, and turns that display low or off. She is left handed, so it works out great.

You should try it, turn the inside lights down low-low or off and you can really see better at night.
I am amazed to see how bright people have their dashboard lights set at night when driving on the interstate. I always have mine down lowest of low or off.

Have a good one,

No, it's 2018 build. BMW does technical updates throughout the model year, typically at the start of a quarter, so they had this one in July too add new "features". The 2018 F60 model year production started in March 2017.
