Talk about bad luck

Talk about some bad luck, I finally bought a brand spanking new 2012 S Countryman yesterday. Light White with black top.

I live about 85 miles from the dealer and on my drive home I stopped at a gas station to get a soft drink and imagine my dismay to see smoke rolling out from under her when I stopped. I took a look underneath and there was oil all under her. I could also see it dripping down from everywhere under the engine.

Well, after getting a tow back to the dealer and getting a loaner from the dealer. I finally made it home at 10:00 at night. No for sure word on what the exact problem is, but the service advisor say they think it may be leaking from around the lines going into the turbocharger.

Sigh....Some people have all the luck

I'm very sorry to hear that :(

I hope the dealer is going to make things right quickly.

Wow, that would put a damper on the new car experience. I hope the dealer is doing extensive good will recovery for you.

Wow, lucky you saw it before things got worse and you ran the engine out of oil. At least this happened at a service station and not out on the road somewhere. Sounds like you really don't know how much oil leaked out before you spotted the issue. I assume you didn't happen to check the oil dipstick level to see how much oil was gone (can't say I would have thought of it at the time either). The good news is that (I assume) that you did not get an oil pressure warning that would have indicated the engine had run dangerously low on oil. But still, I would be more than a bit concerned that there has been permanant damage due to the engine running low on oil, and that the results of the damage might not be obvious until tens of thousands of miles later. If this happened to me, I don't think I would be able to stay as calm as you sound.

Sorry to hear this. I would be on their case to take it back and give me another one. I would be worried about possible engine damage that wouldn't show up until down the road.

I did check the oil when I get to the gas station. It was less than a quart low. (the level was still in the safe zone on the dip stick) This has really put a damper on the new car experience for me as FredoinSF said. I know that it's just a machine and machines break sometimes but this is something I think they should have caught in the predelivery inspection. I'm not a real happy camper right now.

Maybe there is some sort of warranty I don't know about, but once you sign the papers you own the car. There is no question that the dealer and MINI should be generous with some sort of good faith gesture, but to get a different car you pretty much have to go through the lemon law process which takes several visits for the same problem.

I hope the car gets fixed quickly.

After doing some research, Fredoin SF is right. (as least as far as my state is concerned) My state requires that the dealership be allowed to fix it 3 times before the lemon law is applicable.

On a good note, I did hear from the dealer today and they are supposed to have it done by tomorrow afternoon. They said the it was a faulty fitting in the feed line going into the turbocharger. They said that since it was less than 1 quart low on oil that they're shouldn't be any damage.......let's hope anyway. Also, supposed to have my bonnet stripes put on tomorrow, which I think they should pay for, for my troubles. Anyone with me on this?

I am. I think they should definitely do something for you.

While I would be pleasant about it, I would hope they would go out of their way to do something to make up for your time, energy, and patience. Dealers don't make their money on cars, they make it on service, parts, etc., so there's an incentive, on many levels, for them to do right by you. Simply fixing something that was just delivered new wouldn't cut it for me

Finally got my Countryman back for the shop today. Final diagnosis, failed gasket in the oil feed line to the turbocharger. Now she runs and like a MINI should. No forseen permanent damage as it was less then a quart low on oil when I noticed the leak. The dealership didn't give me to bonnet strips unfortunatly but did knock some off the price.

And here she is:
