Noises

I my wife has a CM 2 months newer than mine. I noticed on hers when the engine is first cranked there is a serious rattle in the engine compartment. Like metal to metal. My car is doing it too now.

Also, when the moon roof is cracked open, there is something vibrating up there and I can't figure out what it is. Even when fully open. I can't tell if it might be between the roof liner and roof.

Looking for similar issues to help resolve these. When we get the car serviced i will have the tech look at the engine.

My car does the rattle. I would have been concerned, however two CM's that I test drove prior BOTH did the same thing....

Look at the sunroof rattle sticky and see if that helps.

Uh Oh Could that be the infamous cold start rattle chain tensioner problem seen on the R56...Hope not

If it is a serious problem, it's good to see it's happening early and clearly under warranty. I'm expecting some design problems with this model, just because so much of it is a radical departure from the Cooper/Clubman design.

Might be worth extending your warranties, y'all.

4 years / 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. For $3000 or so (about $3400 if you include radio/connected) you can get it extended to 6 years / 100,000 miles.

However, when a car company acknowledges a design flaw, especially if it recalls it, that flaw is often covered even if the warranty has expired.

Can you describe the engine rattle any more? Does it have a consistent rhythm or sort of all over the place? There are some threads about the fuel injectors being noisy on a cold start that gives it a high ping noise and low exhaust note (some compare it to a diesel) but that seems to subside when the engine gets warmer...

When I first heard the noise I described above I was concerned, but have come to accept it as just different then what I was used to. The ones at the dealer also sounded like that. So either they all have problems or that is just the characteristic of the car. Either way the warranty helps put the mind at ease.

Sounds like injectors to me, but bear in mind that I'm not an engine expert by any stretch of the imagination.

The sunroof rattle is very common and takes 2 minutes to fix. There's a thread in the Fixing Problems and Issues forum that includes photos of the part that causes the rattling. As I recall, it is a small part that protects the drainage in the hatch that is rattling. When the hatch is open, you just snap that part off and you're fixed. Even I, who is mechanically inept, could do this fix!

What is the purpose of this part you remove? If removed are you asking for trouble in getting leakage?

Mine just seems a little loud when I first start it up. For about a minute then it quites down. Being this is my first MINI I have a question about engine noise all so. When I give it gas, driving around town not on the highway, it just seems loud. Or I just think its loud. I don't know.

Direct injection engines are typically noisy. Once they warm up, they sound better. Ours has gotten a little quieter since we have passed the break in period.

There is a good thread in the r56 forum that has a database of all the TSBs, some relate to the N18 engine which is in the countryman.

Rattle could be this:

The noise lasts for approximately 20-30 seconds after the engine starts and is audible outside the vehicle.
INFORMATION
In order to meet stricter (ULEV2) emissions criteria, the N18 engine turbo wastegate activation strategy has
been revised in comparison to Cooper S vehicles equipped with the N14 engine.
In higher ambient temperatures (between 64° and 86° F), the turbocharger wastegate stays fully open during
a catalyst warm-up. This condition produces a rattle type of “acoustic feedback” and is created by the
rotating wastegate valve face. Valve rotation is required for proper valve seating.
This type of rattle noise is considered a normal operation/characteristic of the N18 turbocharger wastegate
system.
No diagnostic or repair attempts should be conducted for such a condition.
