Wiper Speed

Just picked up my Countryman on Friday and noticed the wipers won't reach a high speed. I have done everything the manual suggests which is to push the arm past the resistance and it still remains at normal speed. I have asked the service department about this issue and no answer yet. Any ideas?

Do you have the rain-sensing wipers by any chance?

Edit: Oh wait, I remembered that the auto wipers have a fast setting past the auto setting. Never mind.

Should be just a quick lift up of the stalk. One flick up for low, a second for high. Flick down for off. Push down for single wipe. Maybe you're over doing it?

I thought that they were supposed to increase with the speed of the car...
They explained this to me when I picked it up. Haven't had a chance to test them yet....

^right, if you are stopped it will drop down to slow speed even if it is set at high. Were you moving at the time?

also make sure you push the wiper stalk up TWICE. First time is low, second time is high.

They don't go faster unless you're moving. Weird.

So if you at a downpour will driving slowly in town you are SOL? Would think this would have been something they made user preference through setup

I've been in a few fairly heavy rains in the past few weeks and they work just fine. As long as you are moving, they wipe fast enough. They only slow down when you are completely stopped.

He said he does not have rain sensing... So they should wipe at the 2 different speeds whether he's parked or driving.

Rain sensing or not, they only speed up when moving. Tried and tested.

I guess it's time to talk to service…because rain sensors or not they should have two speeds. One push upwards and then another for a faster wipe.

They do have two speeds, but when you're at a stop light they slow down because you're not moving. It's actually pretty cool. My wife's MC does it and I've been driving that around waiting until my CM comes in.

They're not rain sensing they're.. is the car going more than 0mph sensing.

There are three settings for the "manual wipers"
-Intermittent - Push the button on the end of the stalk
-Low - Push up on the stalk ONCE
-High - Push up on the stalk TWICE (or once more)

All three settings WILL slow down until the vehicle is at ANY speed other than 0MPH.

Try it. Idle at a stop light with wipers on high. They slow down, creep forward they'll speed up.

(I'm assuming the wipers are the same across all models of the MINI)

Hey there - please read your owner's manual. There is no reason to schedule a service visit or contact the service department. All BMW/MINI products have this type of wiper system and it is operating normally. They are designed to kick down one level when the vehicle comes to a rest. So, down to slow from fast and down to intermittent from slow depending on the initial setting. They will return to that setting once the vehicle is in motion.

Hope this information is helpful.

ok…let me chime in for the last time…Since it's been raining here in CT, seems like forever I've put my wipers in every possible mode possible. First of all I DO have the Rain Sensors..which will speed up and down depending on the amount of rain it senses. When I activate it by pushing the end of the wipe handle in once and little icon of a wiper displays on the tach between the mileage & trip OD. You can even go into settings and tweak the sensitivity of when the sensor senses the rain. With that off, (my) wipers will wipe at a slow to intermediate speed and a additional push up it will wipe faster..does not matter if your sitting in your garage, the sunniest day outside, or driving through the rain forest, those are the (2) speeds.
If the countryman is turned off you do have to re-push end to activate the the sensor. So unless mine is different than others or those ordered w/o the rain sensors wipes differently and that they some how slow or quicken up…it should be pretty straight..If that's not the case..check in with service.

I believe the OPs question has been answered more than once. He had NON-rain sensing wipers to which I posted a detailed explanation on the function of the wipers above. I'm not sure what point you are trying to prove, however I've never owned a car with "rain sensing" wipers before but I know I'd be upset if I had to "turn them on" if it started to rain because...well.. then I'm sensing the rain.. not my "rain sensing wipers"

Navy…isn't it your vehicle that has the wiper issue ?
And yes you do have to activate them..I guess they wanted to offer option of just using the manual positions as well. I would not want the wipers to be on all the time, especially in the winter. The last thing I would want is to have my blades try to swipe 2-3 inches of crusty snow off my windshield automatically and not control it's functions.
