Like the PT Cruiser when it first came out, way over MSRP. My dealership sells at MSRP and I haven't heard of anything off that. A friend is the sales manager so I assume he wouldn't be stretching the truth.

Why is everyone acting like this is something new??? The 1G Miatas had $20K markups when it first hit the market and people were STILL paying over that. They were literally doubling the price of the car with markup and couldn't keep them on the lot.

I think $3K of markup for a highly anticipated car that has room and gets great mileage, especially when fuel prices are climbing, is nothing. Hell, in Sacramento we see those kinds of markups on stuff like Mitsubishi Lancer Evos.

I agree it is nothing new. I was just surprised that a mini dealership would do this when I haven't heard of any others doing the same thing. Seems a little "anti-mini" to me but you are right, they can do what they please. Just hoping that doesn't turn off some folks who might be new to mini as a brand. Hopefully those people shop around.

So exactly where in my post did I say or even imply that this is a new practice? I merely stated that I find the practice despicable and would not do business with any dealer who sells above MSRP (save perhaps cars like Ferrari). In fact, before even sitting down at the dealer I asked if they intended on selling above MSRP.

There is a lot of margin in the car at MSRP. If the dealer wants to charge beyond that AND you are willing to pay it, then be my guest. Please.

You didn't. I just quoted you because your post was the most complete regarding the practice is all. I was just piggy-backing off what you said, not criticizing or calling you out or anything.

My "Offer Sheet"

I would like to thank those that posted their sales price below MSRP. I used that information to put together my offer sheet (see attached). I then emailed it to several dealers until one accepted; following the Rizzo Method (http://www.e46fanatics.com/faq/rizzo.html). I also contacted USAA Car Buying Services to verify the strength of my purchase.

B.L.U.F.: $500 off MSRP and free Sunshades with a very high trade in value. I was happy. Again, without this forum I would not have been able to talk below MSRP.

I hope this information and my word document is helpful for others.
Good Luck!
