Wow – What have I been missing…
I’m new to the forum thing so take it easy on my please, anyway this is a cool website and I wish I new about it a long time ago. I have found a few answers to my questions and read a bunch already. One question for here though, do people make fun of you also for driving a Mini? They make fun of me alot
Well 2 questions then…I’m not sure I like the name NAM, bad connotations.
Anyway cheers

Usually smiles and thumbs up. Every now and then comments about being to small, or dangerous. They are usually just uninformed/ ignorant.....
Don't wory they're just jelious
Nik
Oh, welcome to NAM
(not sure what the bad connotations are
)

People make fun of you for driving a mini?
I think they're just jealous.
This guy at work was laughing his *** off when I told him how we get together and go on trips with minis. I don't think there's anything funny about that. No other car group ever does that. Jeeps do but that's it!
They don't get how passionate we are about our minis. I get so excited when I see a mini on the street and I'm so looking forward to AMVIV in March.
Don't listen to people that "make fun" they don't get it.

Other cars have big cult followings too. Mazda Miatas, PT Cruisers, etc. all have active car clubs, which gather for long drives, autocrosses, meet-n-greets, and more. The MINI community is great, but we're hardly innovators in that respect.
I don't get made fun of for owning a MINI, but many people have preconceived notions about how (un)safe the MINI is. They think I'm driving around in a death trap. These are people who drive large SUV's, and consequently believe that many feet of heavy sheet metal protect people from injury in an accident. This is an old-school, archaic thought process, that they will never give up, no matter how much crash-test evidence you provide to them. They also don't buy the airbag or crumple-zone arguments. Like I said, they're thinking is archaic and outdated.
I've learned to ingore pretty much everyone's opinion of my car. I drive what I like, and why should I give two s#@ts what anyone else thinks?
Life is FAR TOO SHORT to worry about what others think.
If you like MINI's, then by all means, drive a MINI!
Lastly, the negative connotation that some people refer to, is how NAM is a shortened reference to the Vietnam war. "When I was back in 'NAM..."
So you could perhaps understand why they'd consider that a negative.
Since I grew up after the Vietnam war, it certainly doesn't carry the same weight. So I don't have a problem calling North American Motoring NAM, but at the same time, I respect all those who served our country in the war.
That being said, have a nice day!

DARE TO BE DIFFERENT
I have not had anyone make fun of me or my Mini and if they did they would just have to get ABOVE IT.
As far as NAM and bad connotations, I don't know how you come to that conclusion.
Enjoy what you have and move on.

As far as it being a "chick car", (and let me go on record to say that I absolutely HATE that term), I don't think it is one, if there is such a thing.
Anyone who enjoys the act of driving, (a.k.a. motoring), is an enthusiast. Consequently, anyone who appreciates motorsports, and driving a wonderful driving machine already knows how great the MINI is.
Those who don't know how much fun these cars are to drive, or how excellently they handle and perform, they're just misinformed.
Therefore it is YOUR CIVIC DUTY to spread the good word to all non-believers. Educate them on the MINI, and how much fun it is to drive!!!

I've had some people do it they quickly realized I was having too much fun to care. I do get a kick out of when stragers see me get out of the car and it is ovious they are expecting someone who is small and I'm 6'1" 225.
I've had some realatives wonder if I felt it was too small around semi-trucks, but I'm also one of the few I know who is extra comfortable around trucks cause they look just as far ahead as me (far more predictable than a Civic driver on a cell phone IMO) and I know better than to hang around blind spots.
Those that ridicule have obviously never ridden in a MINI. Let them hop in the passenger seat and hit the twisties. I guarantee they will change their opinion and may start asking more questions which may lead to them purchasing one of their own.
I have had my MINI for a few weeks, but so far I have only had positive responses from everyone. Everyone has lots of questions (and boy is hard for MINI lovers to talk about their MINIs) Even my dad, with his “A vehicle should be bigger then a breadbox speech”, was won over immediately. Life is too short to worry what most people think, especially when you consider that a lot of people are not capable of independent thought. Bottom line…if you love driving a MINI half as much as the rest of us do, then you made a great choice. Welcome to the NAM family.
Practice...
...your "you look like a moron" stare.
Then give an ear-to-ear grin.
I've had only 2 dudes express snide remarks, but the 100+ positive remarks from others have more than made up for it.
When I was a little brat (early 60's), my dad had a Mercedes. I remember a run, with an autocross. So the concept is old... really old.
Welcome to NAM!

I always pronounced North American Motoring as "NAM" like "i dont give a damn". Not like "'Nam", where they dropped bombs.
(Yeah- I think I just made that up!)
Looking at Fast05's profile, I think people make fun of him for driving indoors. That's very dangerous.
Seriously, welcome to the cult of Mini! I'm lucky to have had dozens of positive and zero negative comments on the car since July. 80% success rate on waves from other Minis. And every day I'm amazed that such a cute and absurd little car can be so nice inside and have so much power without any modifications. When I take Gizmo out to the cafe or REI on weekends, he and the Mini both rate about the same amount of "that's cute" & "I want one just like that" comments. They are my conversation-starters.
For folks new to the site or to Minis, there are also a lot of useful threads in the "1st gear" department. Also, I have found a wealth of information in "Detailing 101", and I've since become a detailing snob. I know what microfibre means, I know how to clay-bar, and I raise my nose when I hear of a car-wax you can actually find in a store.

This is the first time I've hear the "chick car" thing. Next time someone tells you that, beat the crap out of them and then ask them how it felt to get whooped by a chick.
