Is there a problem with using 87 vice 93 octain gas in Mini's? I read where the Mini is able to use in that range but has anyone got an experience per MPG from the different grades of gas?

This is definitely one of the top 5 questions discussed here, and there have been several threads in the last few weeks (as you might imagine). I'd try doing a search for "87 octane". The general consensus seems to be that by running the engine on fuel that it wasn't designed for, you risk decreasing your mpg and negating any $ savings, not to mention possibly damaging the engine over the long term.

 

When you get a MINI, if it's a MC, open the gas filler door and read the label. Right there, it says "Use only Premium, 91 octane".

I'll take their word for it.

Thanks your comments help. The nice thing about Minis is the size of the tank keeps the cost per fill down when compared to other vehicles. Hopefully the costs will come back down in a cuple months after the prices adjust for increased production after Katrina.

I experimented with using regular grade fuel and found that I got worse mileage, so I resumed using premium. In Cali, we have 91 octane. When I travel, if I am in a state with 93 or 94 octane, sometimes at the half-tank point, I will fill with either regular or mid-grade. But it's best to follow the manufacturer's suggestion of 91. It's also stated in the MINI Owner's Manual. :smile:

don't forget that the octane rating at the pump
can be stated either as RON, MON or (RON+MON)/2

so depending on the state's labelling requirement,
91 octane here might not equal 91 octane elsewhere.

and how during WWII, regular gas was 60 octane and high test 83
and avgas 100.
