Old Car Sold...Almost time to order the MINI
Old Car Sold...Almost time to order the MINI
Hey everyone. I sold my Galant today finally. Got what I wanted. I now have the money I felt I needed to put down on the MINI. I'm holding off on ordering it though until late January/early February. There's a slim chance the wife and I may have a shot at buying a really big, old house and if that were to happen then I don't want to buy something as expensive as the MINI. I'd probably get a base model Golf instead to free up some income.
I'll know more in a couple weeks.

With the time frame of Mini orders so far out your best bet is put in the order now, and cancel later if you need to. You are at least 3 months out for arrival right now... So order it to be safe!

I am not one of those people that hedges his bets like that. I'll wait and see first. Besides, I'd have to get it in writing from the dealer that my $1,000 is refundable. Personally I don't see why they would take a deposit only to give it back. But anyway that's thoroughly discussed in another thread.
I'll post what happens in here.

My Mini dealer takes the $1000 Check, puts it into my "Deal Jacket" and doesnt cash it until the car is in and we have a deal, and at that time I can replace it with a cashier's check for the full amount. Most take the check just to make sure you are a serious buyer...
Order it, just to be safe, you can cancel at anytime, confirm that with your dealer, it wont cost you anything

I love the enthusiasm you guys have. If I have waited this long I can wait 3 weeks longer.
I do understand the way the $1000 deposit works but if it was my dealership, I wouldn't give it back. The whole point of a deposit for any item is to give the seller some security that even if the deal falls through they make some money. As a dealer if I took $1,000 to order a car and the buyer backs out, oh I'd be keeping that check.
We'll see how this thing goes. Like I said, odds are the house will be sold before the end of the month shutting us out. And I'll be at the dealer a day or two after that happens. If it doesnt close and we end up getting it I'd still see if we could swing the MINI but it'd be a lot tighter.

The dealer doesnt mind giving the deposit back, as soon as a cancelled order becomes available there is ALWAYS a new customer who is willing to take over the order just to get it there sooner than if they were to place new order....
The Mini's are selling so quick it doesnt matter who orders or buys it, it is all a matter of getting an order placed and one coming to the dealership. Most dealerships are into late Feb production, late march/early april delivery right now... some are even further out...

Let me say, again, that I understand all of that. It does not matter. If I end up having a longer wait it just means a larger down payment for me because the $300 that was going to my previous car payment is now going into a savings account for the down payment. Right now I anticipate putting down $6,000 but if it takes a month or two longer it might be as high as $7,000.
