Welcome to NAM !

You could really mess with your roommate and get a JCW.

Welcome!

1st thing to decide is what generation you want. That will point you towards the best sub forums. Gen 1's are 2006 and older (for the most part) Gen 2's 2007-2013. Each generation and model has its own issues. Learn the model code to help with your searching as well (mine is called R53)

Having dumped over $28K into a 2005 MCS, I have to warn you that lemons exist and are awfully expensive if you get one (like me). What's worse is that I had mine inspected by the local MINI dealer before purchasing it, they gave it an enthusiastic thumbs up (were they ever wrong).

Whatever you end up with, make absolutely sure you check the oil every fill-up - seriously - if you end up with one like I did, they can consume 1L/1000Kms without you even knowing it.

They're expensive to maintain, but the grin factor they give is difficult to replicate for less than $40K

Good luck, and don't forget to wave when you see another MINI.

Motor on!

If you are looking at a first generation, read this:

That motoringfile.com URL was helpful when I was searching, ended up with a 2006 R53 with a 6-speed manual(purchased from a member here).

Thanks db130,
I found the article useful as well. I was looking at a 2002 S till I read that. Finally settled on a Hyper Blue Metallic 2005 Cooper S. Would have posted pics but I have only had it a few weeks and I have been spending all my free time looking for corners. Wheeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks to all that posted advice.
Here's to many years of Minfatuation!
