A worried Newb

Just bought an '07, love the car - it's my "sports" car, as I drive an F250 diesel usually. Now I am reading about water pump recalls and timing chains! I didn't buy a VW tdi for the same reasons! I just wanted this thing to run up and down the freeway on the days I don't need my truck (120 mile round trip). Should I bail while I still can?? I obviously don't have a warranty and don't want to shell out $2K soon for a timing chain replacement.
But, I do love this car....

Jim

I don't have my Mini CM yet, so maybe not the best to give advice on Mini reliability, but I have been around car enthusiast message boards long enough to know that you're best off ignoring that stuff.

People are more likely to speak out about a negative experience. You aren't going to see a lot of posts from people with, "Another 10,000 miles with no problems!"

I tend to ignore all the negative and buy what I like, and it's worked well. I have a 2000 VW New Beetle turbo that I've owned since new. If I had listened to consumer reports or all the negativity, I never would have bought it. Its been one of the most reliable cars I've owned, and that includes two Toyota 4Runners, which were the most unreliable of the cars I've owned.

Not sure why you'd up and sell a car you are enjoying, and having no issues with, just because you read some posts from a few people who had issues.

I'd say enjoy your car, and "if" you have issues, worry about it then.

If your car qualifies for the aux. water pump recall, it should have been done before you bought it. I suggest you research that and take it in if it wasn't replaced. MINI covers the cost, so it's not a big deal. Any dealer can check by running your VIN.

Other than that, congratulations and Happy Motoring!

Agreed.

Just to make you feel better here is my feel good story.

I just bought my 2nd MINI! I bought my 1st new in '05 and drove him for 129,000 miles. I was still on my original clutch that I learned to drive on. For the most part my repair costs were minimal. My only major repair were the control arms ($1000) otherwise all other repairs were under $500. Which I don't think is cheap but still I know that by owning a MINI I may be paying a premium for things.

I had a VW before my MINI and it just had the weirdest problems that always cost at minimum $500 to fix.

I loved my MINI very much and if I knew how to fix cars or had someone around that trusted I would still have that car. At a certain point it needed maintenance that I just didn't care to do. So I decided I wanted a new car.

Don't freak out about the bad things you read here. Instead feel relief in knowing that there are tons of people here that can advise you or listen if and when an issue comes up. Enjoy your new to you MINI!

-HAPPY REPEAT MINI BUYER!
