What cars can I race and win?

Stock 2006 MCS 6 speed and sport susp

What cars(stock) can I race and win? Straight away. I know I can take almost anything on a curvy road.

I know no one here would condone racing anyone on a city street...hypothetically speaking only...of course.

Well, I took a BMW 325i.... somewhere.

There's plenty of cars you could take at the DRAG STRIP if they showed up.

It's all about power to weight ratio, how well you can shift vs. how well they can, etc...
Essentially the P-W Ratio will give you a good idea though.
Don't forget about AWD vs. FWD or RWD.

I guess I was thinking in general terms. Same driver skill level etc. Heck I use to take lots of folks in my brides 05 Odyssey.

haha, NICE! Yes, I get what you mean, I'd bet that you can take a lot more cars than you may think.

Most important question...

Can I take my neighbors POS, GrandPrix on steroids, late model GTO?

As a former owner of a late model GTO (which was far from a POS, btw), I recommend you get used to seeing GTO tail lights on any straight section of road.

My best personal results in both vehicles:
My GTO 1/4 mile time: 13.4 @ 104 mph.
My MCS 1/4 mile time: 14.9 @ 94 mph.

Do yourself a favor, and go for a ride in a few other vehicles and learn to appreciate their unique aspects that make them desirable to their owners. Maybe then you'll be able to appreciate your car a little more while respecting the choice of others, regardless of their strengths and weaknesses. And you won't feel compelled to have to show up your neighbor, either...

Here's an example of a database for 0-60 and 1/4 mile ET's for thousands of cars. Generally speaking, anything quicker than 15.0 is faster than you, and anything 15.5 and slower is, well, slower.

I'm sure you know this, owning one previously...it's not me who is trying to show up my neighbor...but the other way around.

Why even worry...

if that's how the people prove their worth, you need to hang with a new crew.

Also, before you go dragging lots of cars that think the mini is a joke, go look at what the penalties are from your local law enforcement for exhibition of speed, and street racing. Go take your car to a track, push it where you are encouraged to, and you'll find the urge to do what you're hypothetically comtemplating diminishes a lot.

I guess that's a long winded way of saying grow up a bit.

Thanks Matt,

Most of the flack I hear is just garage beer drinking chatter. I just like to know the facts. If something were to come down to put up or shut up...Sat mornings at the strip would be the place to right any wrongs.

The link Dan gave helps a ton.

As for growing up...not sure what that was for. I simply said my neighbor has been tossing out some crap to me. I understand from Dan that his car is faster than mine. Do all Mini owners just roll down the window and yell "grow up" to every Honda that revs it's engine next to you?

You'd be surprised

at how slow some cars are, and how fast others are. With a manual, it all comes to the launch. Do that well and you'll smoke a much faster car that doesn't do it right....

And go to a road course. I hang (sometimes) with the local Shelby club. When we have driver training events, and I put coaches in the seat for the cone slolom, not one has been anything but impressed with the Mini. And these guys have high HP modified track cars.

In a drag, the Mini isn't so good. (Check out some of the numbers from the Nissan Altima). Put it on some twisties, and that's where it shines.

I know it goes against most of the Mini's community philosophy, but I do enjoy the occasional spontaneous stoplight grandprix that goes up to the speed limit. <GASP!> It usually doesn't take long to figure out if you're closely matched, outgunned, or underpowered. Most of the time, however, just having a good idea of what other cars run will make you realize it's not worth the gas since you'll likely know ahead of time if you'll win or lose.

As mentioned, the track is the safest and best place for all out bragging rights, however, since you never know what to expect when on the street (hiding cop, car pulling out, psychotic driver, blown tire, wayward pedestrian or animal, etc...). EVERY guy who has ever wrecked or got arrested in a street race didn't expect it to happen any more than you or I expect it when we hit that gas pedal. Risk vs Reward scenarios should come to mind, and you'll soon realize it's typically not worth it...

As for the '71 Nova running a 16.5, it depends on the motor that's under it's hood *now*. A few of the old muscle cars sound faster than they are, but there are plenty of them that are beastly and will take your breath away. I enjoy meeting plenty of different enthusiasts and learning more about their vehicles in 5 minutes (some of it true, some of it BS) than I would spending an hour online.

Very true and well put. We put a 350 in the Nova back in High School, late 80's. My Street Grand Prix experience rarely gets to third gear. I just like know if the guy from the Toyota commercials pulls up next to me in his Red Camry...I can take him. "Sup...Spider, E-Train"

The ricer crowd has a pretty good following in the burb I live in. A few Saturdays ago a kid 20 years to my younger pulls up next me. I got a large Starbucks for my bride jammed into an 06 cup holder. I just want to know if the look on this kids face is worth spilling it over.

Didn't mean to ruffle any feathers with the POS GTO comment. I'm not a big fan on the remade muscle cars. Knowing I have to respect them is a good thing though.

To each his or her own. With that being said, I'm not a big fan of the new GTO. As John said, it looks practically just like the Grand Prix, with a few minor changes. I wasn't a fan of the Grand Prix either. *shrug*

I find that I get rather bored with drag racing. Yes, it does take some skill, but it's a very short lived amount of fun. 15 seconds vs. going up to the mountains for an hour or more of twisties... now that's my idea of fun!

there are some more but no one else seems to be answering more debating on why you shouldn't race. i'm assuming you are on a track. and blocking out the notion that you will be racing on the street and endagering others.

How do you figure a stock MCS (low 15's in the 1/4 mile and at best high 6's 0-60) and doesn't launch well with FWD will beat WRX with AWD (low 14's in 1/4 mile and 0-60 in the 5's) and a GTO with RWD (13's in the 1/4 mile and 0-60 in the 5's) that can both leave the Mini carlengths behind within the first 100 feet?

For example, from my track experience, my stock 2002 WRX was getting 1.9x second 60 foot times. My stock GTO was getting 2.0 to 2.1 60' times. My MCS was getting 2.3 to 2.4 60' times. No way is a stock MCS making up that ground to beat either of those cars, given that driver reaction times and capability are comparable. Sure, if the other driver waits until you go first, and basically spots you 1/2 to a full second, the MCS will stay out front for awhile, but one should not reasonably expect to win against either of those two vehicles aside from fluke circumstances.

You need to respect the old iron more...

remember, all those early times were made with tires that are just a bit softer than those old stone roller skate wheels from about the same era. Add some sticky rubber and you have a faster car. Say what you want about the new GTO, it's quick.
